Chapter 3
Middle of the night...
Brynn POV
It was absolutely freezing in here. I woke up, curled under my blankets, but my blankets couldn't even keep me warm anymore. And I was wearing Riker's sweatpants and sweatshirt too!
I got up, and found my way to Riker's bed in the dark. I shook his shoulder.
"Riker."
"What?"
"It's freezing in here."
"Oh yeah, it is..."
"Well can you put on the heat or something?"
"Yeah, sure..."
Riker got out of bed, and left the room. I got back in my bed.
But Riker came back about a minute later, looking nervous.
"What?" I asked.
"This cabin doesn't have heat."
"What!?"
"Uh... I think I'm supposed to make a fire. So uh... yeah..."
"Ok, you do that."
Riker left. I laid in bed, waiting to feel warmer again. Riker still hadn't come back after 20 minutes, and I felt even colder now.
I sighed, and left the bedroom, looking for Riker. I found him near the fireplace, but there wasn't a fire.
"What's taking so long?" I whined.
"Um... I can't uh... I can't get it to start."
I sighed, and sat down on the floor next to him.
"You really don't know how to make a fire?"
"No?"
"Give me that," I said, taking the matches from him.
I shoved his shoulder, and rearranged everything he'd put in the fireplace. I lit the match, and got the fire started.
"There. Was that really so hard?" I asked.
Riker's cheeks were flushed bright pink.
"I'm going back to bed," I said, getting up and leaving.
Riker remained on the floor in front of the fire. But I didn't care. I was going to get some sleep.
Morning...
Brynn POV
I woke up, and felt really hungry. I'd skipped half of dinner after all.
I didn't see Riker in his bed. So I figured maybe he was making breakfast. I got up, and walked out. But I didn't find Riker making breakfast. He was asleep on the floor in front of the fireplace.
"Riker."
I pushed him a little with my foot.
"Riker, wake up. I'm hungry."
"Huh?"
"Why are you sleeping on the floor?"
"Oh uh... I guess I just sort of fell asleep."
"Can you make breakfast?"
"Yeah."
Riker got up. I followed him into the kitchen. He got out cereal.
We sat at the table, eating. But we were silent. We just kept looking at each other awkwardly.
"Can you please drive me back home?"
"No! Not if you're going back to your boyfriend."
"Riker, this is my life, ok? I can do what I want with it."
Riker sighed.
"Fine. I'll drive you back tomorrow, ok?"
"Good," I said, annoyed.
Later...
Riker POV
I was beginning to get really upset. I mean, I was just trying to save Brynn from that guy. And now she's mad at me. Like... I don't even get it...
And now I'm probably going to be in a ton of trouble when I get back. I'm probably going to jail, and I have no idea how long I'm going to have to be there for.
"Why are you just moping around the house?" Brynn asked, sitting down next to me on the couch.
"I don't get why you're mad at me. I mean, yeah, I kidnapped you, but it was all an accident! I didn't know what to do! I couldn't sit there and watch that guy take advantage of you! You didn't want to go with him. He was about to take you against your will."
Brynn sighed.
"Thank you for saving me. But I want to go back."
"I know..."
"You're taking me back tomorrow, right?"
"Yeah."
The longer I wait, probably the more trouble I'll be in...
"What's for dinner?"
"Soup. I'll make it in a little while..."
"Can we have it now?"
"Fine..."
I got up, and started making dinner.
Later...
Riker POV
"BOO!"
"AH! Quit doing that!" I yelled, trying to get my heart to slow down.
"No. It's fun."
I sighed, and Brynn left the room. I was adding more wood to the fire. It was really cold in here, and it was beginning to snow outside.
I finished tending to the fire, and then I went to the bedroom. Brynn was wearing the clothes I gave her yesterday. And she was curled up in her bed.
"Cold?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Me too. Hopefully the fire will warm it up a little in here."
I slid into my own bed, and pulled the covers over myself. It was about 8:30, and a little early to be in bed, but it was so cold in here.
A little while later, Brynn pulled the blankets off her bed, and pulled them out of the room. I got up to follow her, feeling curious.
I found Brynn on the floor in front of the fire. She motioned for me to come over.
I sat down on the floor beside her, and she wrapped the blankets around me too. We were literally huddled together in front of the fire, shivering.
Brynn was colder than me though. She was shaking so hard. And I was beginning to get kind of worried.
I slowly started to wrap my arms around her from behind. She immediately shifted herself to my lap, and tried to get closer to my chest for warmth. I held her tightly to myself, trying to warm us both up.
"This is awful," Brynn said.
"What?"
"The coldness."
"It just needs a little time to warm up the cabin."
She shivered against my chest. I wrapped the blankets around her tighter.
"I'm sleeping out here tonight," Brynn said.
"Ok. Um... Would you mind if I joined you?"
"Nope."
"Ok, thanks."
I got up, and got my blankets from my bed, and rejoined Brynn in front of the fire. She wanted me under her blankets with her. So we made up a little bed on the floor with the blankets, and we literally cuddled for warmth.
And we fell asleep like that.
