I laid my chin comfortably onto my drenched arms as I rested them along the rim of the tank, my tail churned a current and Sam zipped joyfully around beneath me. My gills shivered in excitement, finally I will be able to hear what exactly groups of mermen and mermaids do! I loomed over the edge excitedly while Mark struggled to find his spot inside the book. I couldn't help but admire his concentration and determination to help me find my origins and for once, to know more about others in the same species! At least now I will now longer be constantly wondering who am I? The pondering that has been sickening my mind for years will be put to rest...
"Ah ha! Here we are!" He drew his finger over a page as he examined the literature. "Already, now, before I start. Of course their might be some small errors in this since this was written when people vaguely interacted with mermen and mermaids so your going to have to tell me if you hear anything you know that's incorrect, but I have a good feeling most of this has some truth to it!" Mark smiled with bodacious, his warm brown coloured eyes gazed admiringly up at me as he began to clear his throat with a few strong coughs. I nodded understandingly and settled myself deeper into my crossed arms as I waited for Mark to start. A deafening silence lurked in the lab as Mark prepared himself.
"According to Gaelic legend, the Merrow frolicked in the frigid waters near the rugged coastlines of Ireland." Mark quoted as he shuffled his shoulders and adjusted the book in his hands. "Well, I guess we can say they got that right!" He awkwardly presented a smile and I chuckled reluctantly. I could tell that it both reminded us that I did more than just frolicked around a coastline, I was the prisoner with my isolated fears and that coast was my cell. The place I suffered in silence. I can't fault Mark for saying something that was true...
"These sea fairies..." Mark's resonant voice jolted me out from my dark memories and I snapped back into the present. "Were women from the waist up, and fish from the waist down. Although, there were also male Merrow!" Mark's expression which was already cheerful, lit up dazzlingly as he glanced warmly up at me from the mention of mermen. I smirked playfully in response as I snuggled deeper within myself to listen. "Male Merrow were far less attractive and irresistible then their female counterparts, in fact, they were believed to be monstrous, ugly brings with bright green hair! Mermen have been depicted to also have green teeth, pig-like eyes, a red nose and stubby fin-like arms. In general, ugliness ran across the entire male populace in the Merrow kind! Although, females had green hair as well but it was in a softer, prettier shade or had long golden tresses."
Instantly, I recalled Dr. Walsh remarking that merman were supposed to be hideous. I wonder if he read the same book! Even after the second hearing, I still couldn't believe that we were supposed to be ugly. I peered down at Mark, who which was chuckling to himself. He placed his hand onto his forehead and shook his head slightly stunned. I leaned father over the ledge and reached out my arm to tap him on his head.
"What is it Mark?" I laughed, the sound of my own voice was enough to grab his attention back. I reeled my arms back and rested my elbows on the lip of the tank, my hands propped up my chin as I gazed eagerly down. "Well, I love how it says that mermen were supposed to be ugly, boy how they were so wrong! You look better than most humans I know!" He laughed amusingly as his gaze throughly traveled down my whole body. A glimmer of provoked endearment rose in his eyes and I suddenly felt my heart leap with giddiness. I swayed my tail restlessly and my gills fluttered inattentively. That same feeling of an uncontrollable affectionate urge bubbled up endlessly from the deep pools of emotion inside me. I found myself wanting to embrace him and I couldn't help but satisfy my raw feelings without biting my bottom lip secretly.
Mark turned the page and continued reading. "The Merrow, who were naturally beautiful and alluring, would use their attractive advantages to entice human beings. The beautiful songs the Merrow sang lured them, just like the Sirens of Greek mythology, they used music to tempt humans. These mermaids were mostly kind, but occasionally, they would lash out at sailors or anyone who startled them at the wrong moment!" Mark's face grew invigoratingly attentive and his attention was engrossed fully on the book. His eyes showed strong signs that he was hooked into his studies.
