I rocked caressingly in the coddling arms of Mark as he walked across the sandy coastline. A beautiful sunset was peaking above the rolling waves, causing warm glows of gold to stream softly down onto the sand, making the shoreline glisten and shimmer like tiny fish scales. The clam waters of the ocean shined with rippling streaks of dying sunlight that wobbled and flickered through the tides as they tumbled lazily onto the shoreline.
The sky around us was smothered in gentle smears of colour, ranging from rosy pinks to flaring oranges. As Mark hobbled over the uneven rocky coast, I leaned my body across his chest comfortably. I had my tail flopped over one of his arms, swaying lifelessly and reflecting the sunlight impeccably with my green scales. I closed my eyes lightly as I toke a deep breath, letting myself soak in the warm light as a calming sweet breeze ran across my bare skin, relaxing any stress I had before and flapping the facial gills across the sides of my face lightly.
I could feel my heart swell with exhilaration as I rested my head on one of Mark's broad pecs, hearing and feeling the slight thumping of his increased heart rate as he strolled over the sand. With my eyes closed, I could feel Mark without any visual distractions. It was nice every once in a while, just to absorb the admirable feeling of being with my true love. A smile rode across my face naturally as I thought of Mark again. Instantly, the picture of him when I first met him came into my mind; The smart, intelligent-looking man wearing a professional white lab coat with black bordered glasses. The neatly combed fiery red hair, the warm brown eyes and the bright cheerful smile...
Those were the traits I fell in love with at first, and then following was his deep rich voice, his irresistible personality and his unique emotions. As I bumped around in Mark's arms while he walked, I couldn't help but think of how lucky I was to find such an amazing man...
The sun baked my skin perfectly as we made our way across the coast. I've been getting more used to the feeling of the warm sun on my skin. Every time it was my turn to go to the laboratory with Mark, the more I noticed that he preferred to stroll across the shore than to swim back after the visit. It definitely seemed like that, almost every time it was time for Mark and I to return to the rocks the Merrow and we now lived on, he wanted to walk instead...The more I think about it, I think the reason Mark wants to is because every once in a while, he misses the land while living among the Merrow, a species that has hardly any obligation to leaving the ocean. That's probably why Mark carries me to the rocks instead of just swimming with me to them. It's his way of getting the chance to rekindle with the earth. I can't blame him for doing that, he is a human after all! A species that basically only stays on land and only goes in the water for brief periods of time!
For a long time, I've gotten the feeling that it was good for us to have talked to the scientists, not that it was ever a bad thing to save my species from being confined in a single gorge but that it was also good for my relation with Mark. I don't think that always living under the waves would have been great for Mark's mentality and overall health. Even though he could easily live under the sea with me, with the help of the Cohuleen Druith of course, it still wouldn't be right for a human to be stuck in the water forever. I'm glad that he has these chances to walk on land, it lets him connect to his roots, just like how mine are with the ocean.
"The weather is so nice this evening." Mark said quietly, a sense of whimsical joy rode on his sweet tone. Quickly, I opened my eyes abruptly to glance up at Mark, his face was soft with the golden light of the setting sun, bathing his skin delightfully. A thin smile played at his lips as he savored the warmth of the sun on his face. I could feel a smile rise on my face as a chuckle tickled my throat. "Oh, definitely! It's nice not having rain all the time!" I laughed lightly as Mark chuckled, his shoulders bouncing as a deep bellowing laugh left his mouth. "Rain isn't all too bad! It's kinda relaxing!" He responded defiantly, a twinkle of enjoyment glimmering his his brown eyes as he stared down to me, cradled in his arms, and grinned humorously.
