Instantly after she spoke, I cramped my way through one of the shadowed makeshift paths that sounded as if it was leading to the same direction as her voice. Bits of gold poked me and rubbed against my scales irritably as I flapped my tail fins harshly. I didn't care if the gold junk that cluttered her cave stabbed me, I just needed to see my mother! I blindly traveled through the cave, the sounds of gold clinking filled my ears as I used my hands and flopping fins to get any sort of sense of surroundings in the darkness. Finally, I felt spaciousness engulf me as my body bursted into a dimly lit clearing. I stretched my arms out aimlessly, there was nothing around me. "Seán, is that really you...?"
I turned my head sharply, only to find my eyes gazing into a dark clearing surrounded by towers of golden artifacts. My eyes traveled quickly over the area, scanning the common glitters coming off the gold mindlessly until suddenly, I noticed a dark figure cutting off some of the golden reflections. After a few puzzling moments, my eyes widened extremely and my heart began to trash tremendously.
I could partly see an older mermaid with flowing dark brown hair laying lonesomely in a bed of more shiny clutter. Her head was drooped, her face was hidden by the brown locks of hair swaying causally in front. Her face was pointed downwards as her eyes seemed to be locked with the small harp gripped tightly in her hands. The mermaid's tail was a dark purple which glimmered slightly in the horrible lighting. Slowly and silently, she turned her head up, revealing a face that was dull and expressionless. Her exhausted brown eyes were heavily frosted with many past feelings of pain while her long face showed wrinkles from aging and extreme tiredness. As her head was raising up to look at me, her gaze erupted with sheer shock, her eyes became giant as a leaping gasp flooding her mouth.
"I-I'm S-Seán..." I pointed towards my chest as I nodded thoughtlessly. I could feel my mouth quivering as my eyes grow enormously from the full sight of my mother...
My mother... I couldn't believe I was actually seeing her for the first time! Although, I never imaged her to look like this... I could feel my awestruck heart tug intensely at my wavering emotions, tears began to form in the nooks of my eyes as my breathing hardened. Shivers flew up my spine as I saw the mermaid, presumably Meara, stare at me with utter astonishment. Within the blink of an eye, her deep purple tail swept up abruptly, tossing a few golden coins she laid upon up into the water as she bolted upwards, tossing her arms around me unexpectedly in the darkness. Heavy breathing rasped unpleasantly from her heaving throat as she inspected my face in petrifaction with feeble brown eyes. I gasped forcefully as I felt her body crash onto mine, her chest that was covered in grey clams rubbed jaggedly up against my body so brutally that I even felt her thrashing heart pulsing on me at the same time.
"Seán? Is it you...? Oh it's you! It can't be! It can't be! Oh my little minnow!" She wailed desperately, her voice trembling as incoming tears started to manipulate her troubled eyes. Meara lifelessly flopped her head onto my shoulders as she began to softly weep, her face buried in my skin as her own shoulders bounced roughly from her sudden sobs. "I can't believe your alive, after all these years..." She whispered feebly within the shuddering storm of her quivering breaths. Her voice trailed as she stared beyond me, her eyes blankly searching for memories as if they were written in the rock walls behind me.
"I'm so glad to be able to finally meet you!" I choked out as I placed a hand on her jerking back. Rhythmically, I moved my fingers along her spine and noticed her crying fit beginning to weaken. She feebly chuckled through her weeping. "Oh my minnow, my little boy..." Meara repeated soundly, her voice caught frequently in her choking outburst sobs. "I can't believe your alive.." I felt her brown hair sway along my shoudlers, indicating that she was shaking her head in disbelief as her face was pressed into my shoulders deeply. I found myself becoming slightly annoyed that I wasn't able to get a clear glimpse of my mother, the cave was so dark I was only able to catch slivers of her, it didn't help that her face was hidden up against my body. Though I can't blame her for that... She lost me so many years ago...
