"Thank God..." Mark collapsed into the chair Dr. Walsh was just sitting in, he flopped his arms limply onto his knees and started muttering to himself with narrowed eyes that were fixed onto his feet. Finally this is my chance! I can ask him what's happening between him and Amy! I braced my arms as I heaved myself upright until I was sitting up straight. "Mark?" The mention of this name made him shoot his head up from looking down at the tiled floor, he stared at me in puzzlement as he waited for me to talk. I nervously gulped as I lifted my eyes to look at him straight on.

"Umm, what's going on between you and Amy?" I asked, my voice slightly wobbled with uneasiness while I scratched my shoulder. A long silent pause stretched throughout the lab, he just blinked at me in frustration as he slowly shook his head. He heaved a great sigh and threw his head back onto the chair's head rest. "Amy has hitting on me ever since I arrived here to study on you and it's just been nonstop! I never get a moment to myself without her walking over to me and flirting!" He growled with annoyance, he hung his head low as his flaming hair toppled over his face. He closed his eyes in relief and gave out a long exaggerated sigh. I gazed over at him with sympathy and concern, I guess he must really get tired of it...

He turned his head towards me, giving me a weak smile. "That's why I really like working with you Jack, your the only one who understands me now. The funny thing is that I don't even really like girls!" He stared off into the distance as he huffed with hinted frustration, he pushed his red hair off his face and combed it back with his fingers. He shuffled his legs and back till his posture was straight.

"Well..." His eyes soften as he looked over at me. "We better get started on the eye exam!" He shook the eye testing box playfully in one hand as he hauled himself over and sat down beside me on the table. I pushed myself up and sat with my tail tightly coiled around me, making sure I gave him enough space to sit comfortably. "Alright Jack, I'll be showing you multiple different coloured cards, they will all have a number written on them in a different colour. The point of this is to see what colours mermen are able to see and which ones they can't-"

"Wait a minute..." I interrupted, there was something I just couldn't get out of my mind. "Aren't boys supposed to love girls?" Mark suddenly looked at me sternly, surprise filled his eyes but after a few moments his gaze lightened and he smiled gently. Did I say something bad?

"Well, it's more common to think a boy will love a girl, as you know that's how kids are made. But, a boy can love a boy and it's ok! It's called being gay and I've known since I was young. I used to get teased a lot it in school and I did become a little lonely... You look a little tense Jack! Don't worry, I'm not mad that you asked. I bet you didn't know since no one ever told you!"

I nodded slowly and Mark's face brighten, "Ok! Well, can you tell me what's on this card?" Be pulled a blue card from the box and raised it up for me to see, in orange, a number was written. "16." I answered confidently. "Yes!" He wrote down my answer and continued to pull out new cards.

"Jack you seem to have no colour blindness, of course though I'm basing this off of human vision. You see colours just like humans. If you had the vision of a fish, you would might be able to see colour, not as likely but you would probably be able to see ultraviolet and polarized light! Ok, before we finish your eye exam, I want you to read out loud all the letters you see on this chart until you can't." Mark lifted a huge board from the giant box and held it up for me to read off of.

"E"
"F"
"P"
"T"
"O"
"Z"
"L"

"E"
"D"
"E?"
"D I think?"
"Uhhh... F?"
"C?"
"I can't even tell anymore!"
