‘Hey Jake.’ I said through my cell phone that I have (finally) found. Dad hides them well; very well, it has taken me the entire morning. Well, apart from the hours I spent staring at the empty couch and cursing myself. I just don’t get how I do this to myself and why.
‘Hey babe. What’s up?’
‘Um remember Nathan and his girl friend Vanessa?’
‘That basketball player from the other night?’
‘Yeah him. Well he invited us to dinner tomorrow night.’
‘Really? Cool, which diner?’
‘The one across the street from my house.’
‘Great, I’ll pick you up at say 6?’
‘Sure.’
‘Would love to chat babe but I’m currently at work so..’
‘Oh no it’s okay. See you tomorrow.’
‘Love you.’
‘You too. Bye.’
‘Oh, that’s alright Jake. Yes I didn’t go to work today either, lovely of you to ask!’ I shouted at the cell phone after he hung up. Maybe it is better to keep it away from me while I’m sick.
‘Bells, I’m home!’
‘Julian! Did you get the job?’
‘That didn’t go so well. I slept with the girl and I completely forgot about it and you know, she didn’t.’
‘That’s horrible! Then what?’
‘Uh, a serious of curses and accusations were directed at me then I slowly got out of the office. But, don’t lose hope, I have another meeting tomorrow.’
‘Wait! What if you work at the agency? That would be perfect!’
‘And run into Nathan Scott every now and then? Not so perfect Isabelle. I have no idea how you do it to be honest.’
‘He has changed you know, I could tell.’
‘I’ll pretend I didn’t hear you just say that. And I will also not tell Noah that you just said that and you completely forget that you said anything. We don’t want you near him Isabelle. You know it’s for the best.’
‘Yes sir.’
Let’s hope Jacob can keep his mouth shut. And not ask any questions, ever.
‘Julian, stop eating my soup!’
‘You may look like crap, but you are so not sick. You can’t fool me, so I can share.’
I do look like crap if we’re being honest.
‘I was thinking, maybe I should take the old man and visit Mom’s family for a while?’ Julian said while sipping my soup.
‘What about me? I feel so left out.’ I whined and pretended to wipe a tear.
‘You have work, I don’t.
‘Yeah yeah, you just want to go there and check that Sarah is not dating someone and if she is you’ll make sure to break them up. And you don’t want me to come with because I’ll stop you. Correct me if I’m wrong dear brother.’
‘You are correct smarty pants. But you know what you’re thinking is completely incorrect.’
‘You love her.’ I said in determination.
‘I don’t! How many times do I have to say that for you to believe me.’
‘I won’t believe you because I am correct. If not then why do you do so?’
‘Because they’re not good enough for her and you know that.’
‘And you are Julian? Seriously?’
‘Who said that I think I am? And who even said that I want to be with her?’
‘It’s very obvious okay? And you need to stop, because I am positive she is sick of you and your games.’
‘I’m not talking with you about this.’ He took his plate and went upstairs; shut his door so violently that I sensed the house vibrating a little.
Sarah. Julian and Sarah are best friends since they were both in diapers. They grew up together back when we were living in the suburbs of the UK, due to my mother’s requests of living near her family. In high school, the entire town were positive these two were dating, but Julian kept denying it. After my mother’s passing with a few years, Dad decided he no longer wanted to live there and he took us back to London, much to Julian’s refusal. And till this very day, every single time we go and visit them, it’s like a spark instantly lights between them and she breaks up with whatever guy she’s with. Although I can’t deny that my brother is responsible for the breakups most of the time. And I also can’t deny that she’s forever waiting for him to propose to her or something or at least ask her to be his girl friend. But my brother and his theory that long distance relationships never work out never fails to disappoint her mostly and of course him.
‘How’s my girl today?’
‘Oh hi Dad, I didn’t hear you get it. I’m better thank you.’
‘I’m absolutely delighted to hear that! Will you be going to work tomorrow?’
‘Yes I think, also Julian are going out for dinner tomorrow night.’
‘Great, it’s been a while since you two spent some time together.
‘Yeah, are you positive you’re okay Isabelle? I feel like something is off.’
‘No really, I am fine. Julian was telling me that he’s planning on taking you to the suburbs while he’s still unemployed.’
‘It’s Sarah again, huh?’
‘He doesn’t want to admit it. But, yes, I think it is. God Dad I really wish they would just be together or something.’
‘You know how stubborn your brother is. Give him his space and I’m sure he will one day. Or at least I hope so.’
‘Yeah, me too. Anyway, how was work?’
‘Incredibly tiring. Seth says hi by the way. Remember him? He used to tutor you Algebra when you were in grade four or something.’
‘I really don’t want to remember anything or anyone related to Algebra. I hate it.’ I said with a disgusted face. It’s a miracle how I passed it, seriously.
‘Hey Dad can I have my phone back? I’m getting really bored doing nothing at home.’
‘Are you sure you’re better?’
‘Positive.’
‘It’s in the bottom drawer in my room.’
‘Love you.’ I called while I flew to his room to get my cell phone.
One new text message.
I tapped on it and stared at the screen for what seemed like hours.
Deepest apologies, but it seems that Vanessa won’t be able to make it tomorrow night. It’s just you and I then (if Jacob is not coming). Can’t wait J Nathan
