Dan spent most of his first 4th of July with Heather and the Hamiltons (minus Philip). None of them really felt like going to watch the speeches and public celebrations, so Eliza and Alex organised their own private celebrations. Eliza had cooked a wonderful buffet, and there was loads of alcohol and games, and of course a history lesson from Alex about why we have 4th of July celebrations. Dan couldn't really see why Philip would choose to watch someone he hated give a speech over having fun with his family, best friend and girlfriend.

"Come on Heather! Just one go! S'il vous plait?" Dan begged, holding out the blindfold for her. "Even little Will has had a go."

"Daniel Howell, you are tipsy and I do not 'ave to do something if I don't want to!" Heather huffed, crossing her arms and pouting like a small child in a strop. If Philip had been there, he would've done an impression of her.

"Fine, you jument misérable." Dan watched Heather go sit back down, and then wrapped the blindfold around himself and ordered everyone to spin him. Heather couldn't help but laugh as she watched him stumble down the small garden, fumble blindly for as many clothes as he could to put on and then run back. When he took of the blindfold and realised that he was wearing a shirt around his neck and a pair of pants on his head was priceless. He began to pout but burst out laughing.

Dan took a break from the games to eat and drink and watched Alex, Eliza and the Hamilton children continue with the games.

"I still think you're a spoilsport," he teased, hearing footsteps behind him.

"And I still think that it's way too early to be drinking, don't you, Daniel?"

"Just because you're jealous because you can't have any!"

"Tais-toi!" Heather snapped. Dan laughed at her. "What?"

"Grumpy pants." He sniggered.

"Oh for Christ's sake, stop being so childish!" Dan stuck his tongue out a her. Heather gave a grunt of annoyance and walked back into the house.

"What was that about?" Eliza asked when Dan returned to the group.

"Looked like Heather having a go at Dan for being drunk before noon and Dan being annoying," Angie rolled her eyes.

"Pretty much, yes."

"Dan, honey, I think you should lay off the drink for a little bit. Anyway, I think it's time for lunch, don't you?" Eliza suggested. They all nodded and began to eat from the buffet.

When Philip returned, it was getting late and the fireworks were already being let off. He walked into the house to see his family laughing together but all he could think about was how angry he was.

"Pa! Pa!"

"Philip? Good, just in time for our fireworks."

"No, you have to listen! George Eaker has been saying all sorts of things about you! That's basically all his speech was about! He said you're a scoundrel and-"

"Leave it, Phil. I've grown used to insults now, it's nothing." Alex sighed.

"But Pa-"

"Your father said leave it, Philip." Eliza whispered.

"But your name! Our name! It's all tarnished again! I thought-"

"You thought what? Everyone had forgotten? No of course they haven't! Our name is already tarnished, there's no point in defending it anymore!" Eliza shouted. Alex looked at her, "I still get looks of pity from all the women. I can't say I blame them." She looked down at her feet, "Yes, I know I forgave you, Al. I love you. But sometimes it's just a bit annoying..." Angie went up and wrapped her arms around her mother, and the two women stood embraced for a few moments.

"Philip, I think its best if you, Dan and Heather go upstairs. Cool off a bit." Alex advised. Heather nodded and took Philip's arm, gesturing for Dan to follow.

"I know you're angry, cherie, but I think you should stay away from Mr Eaker for a while. You'll end up doing something rash and then I won't forgive you." Heather whispered. Philip nodded, silent and limp. They went into Philip's room and sat on the bed in silence.

"How were our celebrations?" Philip asked, eventually.

"Good. Except Dan was drunk before noon-"

"I was tipsy! And I sobered up afterwards to stop you moaning!"

"But still. They were fun."

"Wish I'd stayed." Philip sighed. Silence fell again. It was a bit awkward in the room.

"Please don't do anything stupid. Promise me?" Heather begged.

"I can't do that. I want to wring his neck and hang him out to dry. I want to watch him suffer as I have because of my father's mistakes." Heather shuddered and looked at Dan. They'd both seen enough suffering in their lives.

"Pheeleep, don't. You can not... harm a man in such a way because he's caused you harm. Then you just keep hurting each other and it never stops." Heather advised, placing an hand on his arm.

"It would be so easy. I could take Pa's gun and go up to him and challenge him. All I'd have to do is sh-" Philip seemed to be muttering himself now. Eaker's speech had really fucked him up. Clearly another trait Philip had inherited from his father was the need to protect his pride and reputation.

"STOP!" Heather yelled, "Pheeleep Hamilton, stop this instant! This isn't you and you know it!"

"She's right, you know. You have to just push through. You go out there and duel him and you have two options. Shoot him and go to prison. Or be shot by him. No way, Philip. You are not doing that to us." Dan growled. Philip looked at the floor guiltily, and let out a sigh.

"Fine. I won't 'do anything stupid'." He sighed.

"Promise." Heather muttered through gritted teeth. Philip said nothing, causing Heather more annoyance.

Dan coughed and stood up, "I think I'll go back downstairs. Leave you two to talk it out."

"I need to get a drink, I'll come down with you." Heather said, following Dan out of the door.

"Get me a brandy will you?" Philip called. Heather pulled Dan into one of the neighbouring bedrooms and closed the door behind them.

"What?" Dan hissed.

"What if he does do something stupid? What if I lose him?" Heather bit her lip, looking anxiously up at Dan.

"He won't. I know him. I know what he said was a bit disturbing but he's not exactly Napoleon, is he?"

"But say if he does? What do I do?"

"I don't know." Dan felt bad for her, so he wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on the top of her head.

"I've never felt this way about anyone before."

"Is this because he's the father of your possible baby?"

"Non... oui. But it's more than that.
Je l'aime tellement. You know how hard it is to explain love."

"Yes."

"Shall we go get a drink? And get him a brandy?"

"Good idea. Will you come down and watch the fireworks later?" Dan asked.

"Of course." Heather smiled a true, genuine smile.

"Good."
