The next day, Dan woke up, feeling alone. He'd only slept with Phil for a night, but it felt as if that night had been his whole life and he had to break the habit sharply. It was like rubbing salt into a wound. He grabbed a parcel of money off his desk and got about his morning routine, and then went to work.
Today was the day they'd give Christian the money, just to get it out of the way. They'd meet him at lunch, the excuse was Christian and Phil had a private meeting and that Dan was there to take notes. Dan spent his morning tapping on the desk nervously, glad there was no one around for him to annoy. Oh, he was also occasionally writing up notes or getting coffee. He didn't even know how he kept his job; he didn't do anything even when he had a shit ton of work to do.
Eventually, lunch rolled around and most people left, whereas Dan went up to Phil's office and picked at Phil's pork sandwich.
"Cheese is a better filling," Dan shrugged, pulling out another piece of pork.
"I hate cheese, you know I do. And stop stealing my lunch."
"Cheese is great, you freak!"
"I'm not a freak I just don't like cheese!" Phil argued.
"You're not-" Dan was interrupted by a knock at the door. They looked at each other, stood up and walked to the door. Sure enough, when they opened it, Christian was stood outside, looking as smug as ever.
"Come in." Phil grunted.
"Very cosy." Christian remarked with a hint of sarcasm in his voice as he sat down in the chair that Dan had been sitting in. Phil sat in his chair and Dan had to resort to standing awkwardly in the corner.
"You'll find that every cent is there." Phil said as Christian began to flick through the money. When he was satisfied he grunted.
"Well, I am impressed. I didn't think you'd be able to do it. Thank you gentlemen." He looked at both of them, a look of disgust on his face. He still hadn't gotten over their situation.
"So that's it then?" Dan asked.
"Yes. Well, unless you annoy me. It could always just slip out and then everyone would know." Dan hated the way a man who was so much younger and so much more ignorant than him could have Dan wrapped around his little finger so easily.
However, Dan saw Phil's eyes widen so he rushed over and squeezed Phil's shoulder in an attempt to comfort him, "We had a deal Christian."
"We did. But I'm a business man, and businessmen do what they need to do. Don't annoy me, stay out of my way and it'll stay inside my head. If you don't..."
"Yes we get it, thank you," Phil sighed, standing up and shaking Christian's hand. They watched Christian leave, and then Phil fell into Dan's arms, letting out a deep breath.
"Hey, it's all good. We're fine, it's over." Dan comforted.
"But now I have to pay it all back."
"No. We have to pay it all back." Dan squeezed Phil's hand and smiled. Phil looked at Dan and couldn't help but think that Dan was the most beautiful, kind, amazing man he'd ever met.
"Can we get back to that pork sandwich now?" Phil sighed, wanting to forget about what Christian had said.
"Yes love, we can." Dan smiled, pulling off a bigger bit of the sandwich and grinning as Phil looked at him in shock.
