2 years later
Dan, Heather, Martha and two small children sat around a table in Dan and Heather's home. A lot had changed in the past 2 years. Firstly, there had been the arrival of the children. Not just Heather's and Martha's but also Eliza. She had fallen pregnant and had a son, who she called Philip. He was only a few months younger than the other children.Dan couldn't have been more proud of Heather during those hours she spent in labour. She'd been so brave and so fierce and amazingly strong. She'd had a son, who she'd named Louis. In a time of Georges, Jameses, Johns and Alexanders she found it refreshing to name her child something that wasn't that popular. Also it was French. It had to be French.
Martha had had a daughter shortly after Heather. The Lesters had been so disappointed, saying it was her fault that she hadn't produced a son. But she didn't care because she had a child and she was her world. Phil had liked the name Isabelle, so that was what Martha had named her.
"Dan, pass the vegetables please." Martha said, leaning over to get them. Dan did as she asked, and caught sight of his wedding ring, which still surprised him every time he saw it. It was stil weird to see the black metal against his skin. Yes, another thing that had happened was that Heather and Dan had got married. It was out of choice (finally) and it took Dan a few months of deliberation, but it had been a quick service. Mainly it was all for Heather, so she wouldn't be disowned for having a child out of wedlock (they said they'd got married in secret and then Louis had been created) but also to make his parents happy. They'd got what they wanted and were speaking with him again. Dan was happy with it. If he couldn't have Phil, then he was happy with being married to his best friend.
Dan still missed Phil, and still wished that he'd gone to that duel instead of Phil but obviously that was the way it was meant to be. Maybe they were never meant to be. They may have been soulmates but the world had certainly seemed against them. Not just the death but also the whole thing about it only being a man and a woman allowed to be together.
Dan was happy with the life he'd created without Phil. He had a son and he had friends and a family. He'd accepted Alex and Eliza were the best parental figures he was going to get and he'd accepted America as his home. Dan took in the sight of his friends, his goddaughter and his son sitting together and grinned. Everything was good.
