Losing my Religion

April's POV:
The boards. Every 5th year resident has in the country is travelling to San Francisco to take them. You take three oral tests, you save imaginary patients. Supposedly this prepares you for the real thing. When you can do solo surgeries without an attending present in case you screw up. I don't see how though, it's not the same as the real thing. You don't cut anyone open, you can't hold their organs or suction their blood. These exams are a mind game, and only you can decide how well you play.

6AM, the day before the boards:
"Oh my god! Where are they we are going to be late and miss the boards and all fail and be unprepared and screw our entire futures up and-"
"APRIL!" Owen shouted grabbing my shoulders to shut me up "calm down. The boards are tomorrow, there's a reason we decided to send you a day early, you really thought Yang and Karev were gonna be on time?" He chuckled
"This isn't funny Owen I'm gonna fail and -"
"You are not going to fail because i trained you. We are trauma surgeons, we are soldiers. You are a soldier"
"I am a soldier" I mumbled
"I can't hear you!" Owen shouted
"I am a soldier!" I shouted. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw Jackson walking towards us with Sloan.
"I packed you lunch for the bus in case you get hungry. Eat salmon tonight and cereal for breakfast, brain food." Mark said as they stopped in front of the bus
"I thought you were already on the bus" I cried at Jackson
"Kepner can you hold your whining for a moment, I'm trying to have an emotional goodbye" Mark said and I groaned at him, he handed Jackson his lunch and held his fist out.
"I'm not doing it" Jackson said
"DO IT!" Mark commanded. Jackson rolled his eyes and fish bumped Mark as Mark yelled out "PLASTICS POSSE!". Jackson rolled his eyes again before pulling a face at me and getting on the bus.
"Okay that just leaves Karev and .... YANG!" I shouted at Cristina when I saw her and Teddy coming outside.
"I'm coming, calm down Virgin Mary" she said and I just rolled my eyes at her. She came over pecked Owen on the lips and then got on the bus.
"I'm going to look for Alex." I said walking away from the bus. As I did he and Arizona came outside, "ALEX COME ON!" I shouted at him trying to hurry him up.
"Calm down Apes." He said when they got over to us
"Yeah I almost missed my boards I got there just as they called my name cuz I was screwing one of the hotel staff" Arizona laughed
"Whore." I said
"Well yeah but I still passed so you will all be fine" she replied "I can't believe I'm on my own for two days while you two are away. Good luck" she said walking back inside.
"April! Karev! Get your asses on this bus now!" Jackson shouted at us out of the window and we quickly boarded the bus.

12PM, the day before the boards:
"Thank God! I thought we were gonna miss the boards entirely with all that traffic" I cried as we all dragged ur suitcases into the building.
"Kepner the boards are not for 24 hours we were never gonna miss them" Cristina said exasperated, "you worry too much, this is why you have no friends"
"Hey!" Jackson and Alex shouted protectively
"Okay this is why you have limited friends" she corrected herself
"Not like you can talk. Your only friend is Mer" Jackson defended me
"That's because she doesn't need anyone else, i'm her person" Mer said
"I have other friends" Cristina commented
"Like who Yang?" Alex asked
"You, Torres, Owen"
"Your husband doesn't count" Jackson countered. They continued debating each other's friends as I walked over to the reception desk to collect our registration packets. I found the ones for Seattle Grace-Mercy West and sifted through them to me sure they were all there. As I looked through them I saw two that shouldn't be there. CHARLES PERCY. REED ADAMSON. Their names hadn't been taken off of the list. Tears started to fall and I quickly wiped them away before turning round and starting to walk back to my friends but walking straight into someone. I could hear all of my friends laughing at me and this guy shouted "HEY WATCH WHERE YOUR
GOING!" He looked up to me and saw that I had been crying and asked if I was okay, I said I was then looked at his hat, it was from Mass Gen.
"Hey Mass Gen! The head of trauma offered me a job there, we could be working together!" I said excitedly
"Or you just told me you are taking my job" he said disgustedly before walking away
"Crap" I muttered before walking back to my friends.
"How do you get everyone to hate you instantly?" Meredith jokes. Then they realised I had been crying
"Apes it's nothing to cry about" Alex said
"Oh no it's just, there are registration packs for Charles and Reed and I just you know...." I trailed off. We all stood there in awkward silence remembering the people they had lost.
"Come on" Jackson broke the silence "lets go to our rooms"

2PM, the day before the boards:
"ARE YOU TRYING TO SABOTAGE US ALL!" I cried
"Mer go too your room" Alex said
"I'm not a child Alex"
"I know but we don't need to get infected how could u not mention Zola had the stomach flu you could have infected the whole damn bus"
"Mer come on" Cristina said guiding Meredith out of the door.
"Oh god!" I cried flopping onto the bed
"It's fine Apes" Jackson said
"Course it is for you Avery you got your magic pencil" Alex teased
"Pretty boy has a magic pencil? Oh say more" Cristina mocked
"His mommy brought it" Alex laughed and then got a phone call and went outside.
"How magic is this pencil, and can it stop that" Cristina said pointing to me and I was crying
"Oh god April" Jackson said soothing me
"I gotta go." Alex said coming back in and grabbing his bag
"Go? Go where?" I asked
"Back to Seattle" he said walking out
"WHAT!?" I cried
"Two down" Jackson said
"Mer isn't down" Cristina defended
"She hurled into a bin" Jackson said and Cristina huffed and left, leaving me and Jackson alone in my room.
"I'm gonna go unpack and I'll come back around 7 and we can grab something to eat" he said grabbing his bag and leaving.

7pm, the night before the boards:
Jackson and I were sat in the bar downstairs, I had burger and he had a salmon dish, as Mark instructed. Then the guy from Mass Gen walked up behind me and leaned over my shoulder so our faces were almost touching. "Hey!" He spat.
"Sorry he's had a bit too much to drink" his friend said pulling him away
"Hey don't worry about the job! I know why you got it, my boss does love a red head." He said, implying that I slept with his boss to get the job. I turned around and punched him in the nose. Jackson stood up and got in between me and the guy protectively and the guy punched Jackson in the jaw, shouting "you wanna go!"
"YEAH BITCH I WANNA GO!" I shouted jumping at the guy. Jackson pulled me off as the guy was trying to push me away.
"HEY!" We heard someone shout "KEPNER! AVERY! WHAT THE HELL!" The two Mass Gen guys ran away as we turned to face Dr Webber.
"He started it ..." Jackson started to explain but Webber just shouted,
"GET OUT OF HERE!" And we grabbed our things and ran away.
We got to my room and we were laughing.
"I just punched a guy! I am a soldier" I said
"What?" Jackson said, but I cut him off by kissing him. He pushed me slightly away but only so our lips disconnected.
"What?" I said
"It's just. Well you are kissing me and you are a virgin and -"
"Lexie?" I said
"Yeah"
"Okay so yes I am a virgin but only because I have always played life by the rules. But I just punched a guy. And yes you are with Lexie but, I love you and-" this time he kissed me. I opened the door and we went in and he slammed it closed behind him.
