New Job

I get up the next morning and stare up at the ceiling. Brittany stirs next to me still sleeping. I glance over at my rifle that is propped up against the wall beside me. I slide out of bed quietly and step outside. Glancing around at the compound my mind begins to race. 

"What do we do from here? Do we increase in size or stay the same?" I pause and step back inside, "I need to get a task outside the walls." I grab my rifle and sling it over my body and begin to walk to find Jade. 

I see people begin to walk around as the small group begins to wake up. I walk up to Jade's door and knock lightly. 

"Hey, Ziggles if you're awake I have an idea I wanted to run past you." I turn away and begin to walk toward Khalil, Nick and Tyler who are standing outside talking. I approach them and they all turn to look at me and greet me with smiles.

"Morning boss!" Tyler says.

"Wow alive without any coffee in your system? I'm proud." I say with a chuckle.

"Why the rifle?" Khalil asks.

"Ehh just wanted something just in case I guess." I respond gripping my weapon by the rail, "But yo, I wanted to ask Jade if she would let us go on runs and shit if you guys are down. I would like someone I can trust."

"Yeah sure." Nick replies quickly, "But we need to learn the area for sure."

"I agree." I look toward him, "But before all is said and done let's get the boss lady's okay." I chuckle and turn back toward Jade's room. She steps outside right as the guys and I all make it there. 

"Well morning Wisconsin. I heard you earlier while I was getting ready. What's up?" she places her sledgehammer on her shoulder and smiles.

"Actually, I was wondering how you felt about letting the guys and I go on runs." I clear my throat and continue, "It would help secure more supplies and give us a chance to learn the area."

"Hmmmm." she glances down at her boots and looks back up at us, "Sounds good but stay safe and be very careful out there." 

I smile back at her as the guys nudge each other and laugh. "Oh you know we will be Ziggles. Let's face it," I back away throw my arms out to the side and smile, "We are the best shooters you got." I wink at her and begin to walk back with the guys who are already running back to suit up for a run. 

As I step into my room I notice Brittany is awake and just laying in bed. I rush around the room stripping out of a shirt and jeans and begin to throw on my we left El Paso with. 

"Everything okay?" she asks still waking up.

"Yeah it's all good we are just going on a run, the guys and I, and I'm excited I guess." I pause and smile at her and go back to securing my plate carrier on. 

"Hmmm okay well stay safe." she walks outside and stretches.

I step past her quickly gently placing my hand on her shoulder to move her out the way. "All I know is how to survive. I'll be fine." I laugh and jog lightly to meet Khalil and the others.

"So I figured we ask Jade for any particular stuff she wants or an area she wants scouted. Just any direction so we don't go in blind."

"Smart." I reply noticing Tyler and Nick step up beside me fully geared up as we wait for Jade.

Jade approaches us and clears her throat. "Okay so, what I want most from you guys is to go into town and see about grabbing any basic rations. Food and water mostly."

"Alright, and if we come across any survivors?" Tyler asks.

"You be careful," she looks over the group of us, "And watch that you aren't followed."

"Yes ma'am." I say with a smile as we turn around and walk toward Tyler's truck.
