The lock is my defense.

I sat on the stairs staring out of a window into the street. An abandoned police car sat there, and nothing else would take my attention. My parents weren't in the town during the outbreak. They had hired a baby sitter who had also been killed as I like to say.

The first night was normal, but the second one had scared me enough to lock the door and keep the lights off. I ate most of the perishable items yesterday as I heard some screams, or an occasional gunshot in the streets. I was by myself, and I was doing okay in my opinion, but that car just kept drawing my attention.

I haven't seen anyone alive since the second day. Thinking about it I haven't heard any noise for about 15 hours, but the digital clocks in our house had stopped running, so I may have been off. I wanted desperately to run outside and look inside of that police car.

One of those things haven't passed my house in a while, and I wanted to do it before they showed up again. They would always show up again no matter how quiet you were.

I stood up and went into my room on the second floor. I opened up my closet, and searched for my baseball bat. I was about to leave before I decided to have some more protection. I quickly grabbed my bike helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and shin guards from the time I spent playing soccer. I was suddenly happy that my parents had been so protective of me.

I put on a jacket, and a good pair of jeans before I put on what little armor I had. I grabbed my wooden baseball bat and walked downstairs. My legs were shaking as my mind comprehended what I was about to do.

I waited ten more minutes to make sure there was none of those things around before I opened the door. The door swung open easily after I unlocked and twisted the nob. I took my first step outside in two days as I looked around again for reinsurance that I was safe.

Nothing was around besides trash blowing in the wind. I hurriedly walked over to the car, and tried the drivers door. To my surprise it opened, and I glanced around again before I proceeded. The police car was void of anything useful to me, and I had the hunch of checking the trunk.

Glancing around again I searched for the button to open the trunk. Finding it, I pressed it to hear the clicking sound, and relaxed a bit. Only a little bit longer and I would be inside my house. I walked around to the back and set my bat down on the side before I opened it up.

Jackpot! There was only one thing inside of the trunk, but it would still help me keep myself safe. I reached down and pulled out a very heavy vest that had the word police imprinted on the top with white capital letters. A bullet proof vest, how lucky am I to have this. I set it on the ground with slight relief, ready to get back inside, and closed the trunk.

I leaned down to grab my newly acquired clothing, and then saw one of those things walking towards me. Fear clutched my heart as I looked around for more, but loosened when I only saw one. I couldn't let it live when it would just attract more over to where I was hiding at. If there's enough of them they could break down the door which was only secure with a little lock.

I put the vest on the back of the car, and gripped my bat as I started walking towards the thing that had once been a living person. It stumbled forwards, mouth agape; as if it could taste its next meal already.

I swung the bat at its legs, hoping to topple it while giving myself an advantage. It fell forwards at the first sign of contact. I side stepped the thing as it hit hard on the concrete. I brought the bat down on its back as I saw it try to get back up.

I continued this until I had nearly cut it in half. It started dragging its body towards me with its hands; the intestines pulling apart as it left its useless legs behind.

"Oh My God! How is that possible?" Said I under my breath as fear once again went to take over.

I brought the bat back behind my head and swung down with all my might at it's head. I was met with a sickening crunch, and a tingly arm as it's skull collapsed from the impact. I pulled the bat away and backed up; ready to see if it would move again.

It didn't move, and I quickly looked around to see if any more had shown up while I had fought this one to the ground.

I whispered in disbelief, "I killed it?"

I walked forwards and hesitantly poked the body with the tip of my bat. Preparing myself if it were to suddenly lunge forward at me, but it never did.

"I killed it!" This time with happiness as I now knew how to kill them.

Hit the head. Hit the head and they die.

I quickly lost interest in the now motionless body as I returned back to the car to claim my vest. I grabbed it and walked back to the house with a slight spring in my step. The door remained locked, and I started counting the amount of supplies I had left in my home.

It would be easy to move to the house right next to me now that I knew how to kill them, and that I had better protection. I still knew that I could only do it if there was only one out there. It took a while to bring the one down outside, and I didn't think I could do that to a group of them while they all came after me.

The curtains remained closed, and the door locked. Just because I killed one doesn't mean they will fear me. I went upstairs to take off the heavy clothing, and grabbed a bottle of water from my bedside table to take a few drinks for my parched throat. It was getting dark, and I was ready to sleep.

That night I fell asleep faster with the knowledge that I could kill them on my mind.

Another chapter to those who read this book. It doesn't hurt me if the names not original, or there's not enough detail. I say it's fine the way it is, or would you rather have me go on about how the car looked like for seven paragraphs?

That is what I thought.
