Tails

Charles caught the coin on its descent down, and showed me it before saying what it was. "Tails."

We both breathed a sigh of relief. "At least we still have something to check." I pointed at the two cars on the exit ramp.

He nodded, and we went to the closest one, a red Honda Accord, and tried the doors. It was locked, but the front windshield was completely gone. The inside was ruined, and we would be lucky to find anything of value.

After a few minutes spent searching the car my thoughts were correct. All we found was a crowbar in the trunk along with a tire jack, but that was it.

"At least we got something?" Charles was trying to cheer me up.

The cold was getting to me more. "Let's just find somewhere to get out of this rain. We're gonna get sick if we don't.."

Charles nodded, and held the crowbar tightly. Rain was riveting down its smooth shaft, and piles up at Charles fingers.

"If you squeeze to hard you might break your hand." I tried a joke to ease my own discomfort.

I was awarded a laugh as we kept walking in the rain that was slowly starting to disperse. "Wanna try the next vehicle, or keep trucking?"

A silver van sat on the curb of the road. It was more of a utility truck, but I didn't care enough right now.

"Yeah. Even if it's empty we can spend the rest of the day in it. You know, get some rest, and stay out of the rain, and hopefully keep ourselves warm." Charles had the same idea I had.

We walked over to the drivers door, and I tried the handle. It opened easily, and I glanced inside. My hand was wrapped around the hilt of my knife, ready to attack whatever might be inside. Nothing came out, so I slid it away.

Charles crawled in through the door after I stepped aside. My body was ragged from the weather. Colder than I thought I could ever get, and yet I was still up and moving; for now.

Charles came out a few seconds later. "I've got good, and bad news. Which one first?"

"Give me the good news first." I didn't care about ending on a high note.

Charles straitened his weary stance, and managed to look happy while delivering me what he had saw. "The good news is that there is stuff inside. The bad news, however, is that I actually have no bad news, I was just playing with you.. check for yourself."

This turnabout interested me immensely as I entered the van. I slid the passage door in the front to the side, and was met to a beautiful sight. There was rows upon rows of building equipment stacked inside the back of the van.

There was a hole bucket containing crowbars, three shelfs holding tape, pencils, and glue. The other half of the van held squaring utensils, tape measures, and small hand saws along with various sizes of electrical cord.

On the floor was an access panel, or extra storage. Inside was a first aid pack, and road side assistance bundles. Whoever had left this van must have regretted it later on.

"How has this not been picked clean?" I was dumbfounded.

Charles stood beside me, and closed the door. "I have no idea, but I'm glad we got tails. Think there's enough room for both of us to sleep in here?"

I looked at him again, and a thought came to mind.

No... don't say it...

My face blushed deeply as I spoke the words. "We will fit if you.... if you don't mind sleeping close."

Charles also blushed as he replied. "I'm okay with it if you are..."

"Okay then... we'll fit." I looked away from Charles for a moment.

He didn't say no...
