The Fright Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas

And all through the house

Little things stirred

No bigger than a mouse

They slip between shadows

Remaining unseen

Apart from their eyes

A sickly sliver of green

From the crack in the curtain

Or under the chair

There's a whisper of movement

You're not sure's even there

A flicker that tickles

The corner of your eye

That you just can't quite itch

No matter how you try

They're sneaky

They're silent

They lie there in wait

Biding their time

Until it gets late

The children are sleeping

Curled up in their beds

Whilst little things stare

Hungrily at their heads

But it isn't the children

That makes their tummies rumble

It's the man with the beard

Who down the chimney tumbles

They're waiting for him

To come bearing gifts

To scatter them round

With a flick of his wrist

They're waiting for him

And they're rubbing their paws

Oh, they're waiting for Santa

And they're sharpening their claws...

They've waited a while

For centuries in fact

To get their teeth into

The man in the red hat

And while he visits

Each child's house in turn

They're biding their time

Whilst their hunger grows

What's that on the roof?

A scuffling noise?

Could that be him now?

Delivering toys?

Quickly they hide

So as not to be seen

Except for their eyes

That shiver of green

But he's in and he's out

In a sprinkle of snow

Far too fast

For them to see him go

Beneath the tree lie

Presents galore

And the strange little things

Let out a low roar

While the rest of the world

Shines with Christmas cheer

Their eyes shine with intent

They'll get him next year.....
