Goodbyes

Life-changing experiences give you perspective. For example, being an outlaw from the government makes making up two midterms seem like ants to an oak tree.

I woke up to my alarm playing soft cello music, prompting me to get out of bed. I took a quick shower and made my way to the kitchen to make breakfast. I wanted pancakes, so I fired up the pan and started flipping. My brother, José, walks into the kitchen, taking a seat at the counter.

"Morning, Rebecca." He yawns, "Interesting breakfast, no toast?"

"Heck yeah. I really wanted pancakes," I admit as I flip the last one.

"Yes!" José cheers. He grabs a hot pancake from the plate on the counter and sits at the table. "Don't you have midterms today?"

"Uh, yeah. I do."

He raises an eyebrow slyly, "Shouldn't you be studying?"

I scoff, "I have been! Plus, I only have like, two, today."

"Only two? That's too easy."

I point the spatula at him, "Yeah, hence why I'm not worried."

My mom comes into the kitchen as well, "Good morning you two. How are you?"

I pick up a pancake, "Well, I'm doing great."

Mom sighs, "I'm not doing great. Who made pancakes?"

José gestured to me with a pancake in his hand, "Becky did."

Mom grabs a pancake for herself, "Did you study for midterms today?"

I groaned, "Yes, I did. It took me all night, but I did."

José hopped up from the table, grabbing his backpack and his keys, "Well I got to get to class. Bye Ma, bye Becky!"

I waved, "Bye José! See you later!"

Mom grabbed another pancake from the stack, "You need to get moving too."

I look at the time on the oven, reading 6:55.

I threw the spatula in the sink, "Ooh, you right."

I put on a jacket and grab my backpack. I pick up my keys from the bowl by the door. I run back to the kitchen to hug my mom. "Bye Ma. I love you!"

She puts a peck on my cheek, "You too honey. Do good on those midterms!"

I open the front door and call back, "I will, bye!"

I start my car and pull out of the driveway. I start blasting music to get me in a better mood for these midterms. Like I said before, I wasn't nervous, but it's just test anxiety. Everyone gets it, so I shouldn't let it bother me.

About 30 minutes later, I'm passing by the neighborhood near the school. This truck a few cars ahead of me suddenly stops, making a break chain from the drivers in front of me. Horns start honking, people are flailing rude gestures at them. I see a guy jump out of the driver's seat to push someone walking on the sidewalk into the ditch right by it. I put my car in park and pop my head out of the window. A shadow started to form on the roadway as I see a car-sized rock come hurtling from the sky.

I yell to nobody in particular, "Is that a meteor?"

Upon closer inspection, this thing was glowing bright red. I watched in shock as it crashed into the road, demolishing his truck. The impact sends out a red shock wave, shakes the ground for a good few seconds, and showers everything in dirt and road chunks.
