Jonah's POV
Valerie looked at us with such wonder in her eyes as she waited us on to explain about the mark on her palm. Luckily, her aunt rushed into the hospital room, out of breath and with a worried expression on her face.
“Oh, Valerie! I'm sorry I couldn't be here when you woke up. I had some business to attend to and couldn't get out of it.” Syrina explained all in one breath and then examining every inch of her niece, she asked Valerie, “How are you, dear?”
Valerie stared at her with sad eyes and then she asked, “Why am I attending a magic school, Aunt Syrina? Am I magical? Were mom and dad? Why didn't you tell me?” At the last part, her grayish-blue eyes began to fill with tears.
“Shh. . . Calm down and then I'll explain everything.” Syrina wrapped Valerie in a hug, trying to calm her.
That happened over an hour ago. After Syrina had calmed Valerie down, Nurse Penny had left the room to go fill out some paper work and I, myself, had left to give Valerie and her aunt some privacy, despite my sudden urge to stay and try to comfort Valerie if she became upset again.
What was it about this new girl in town that had me drawn to her?
I was standing outside her hospital room, leaning against a wall when the last person I wanted to see walked down the hallway towards me. Yeah you guessed it. The one and only Francheska Johnson.
“Jonah! There you are!” She practically skipped towards me, her blonde hair bobbing up and down.
“Francheska.” I gritted through my teeth.
“I'm so glad I've found you Jonah!” She grinned a wide Cheshire cat smile.
“Do you need something, Francheska?” I asked her angrily.
That's when Syrina walked out into the hall, from Valerie's hospital room. When she spotted Francheska and I she walked over to us.
“Valerie tells me you're the one who saved her?” Syrina asked me in an odd fashion.
“Yes ma'am. I was.” I replied in a strong voice.
“Thank you for saving my niece.” Syrina shocked me by embracing me in a hug.
“Um. . . You're welcome.” I replied, returning her hug awkwardly.
When the hug ended she turned to face Francheska.
“Are you Francheska Johnson?” She asked, her expression one of utter and complete seriousness.
“Yes. That's me.” Francheska answered, grinning widely.
Syrina narrowed her eyes and then said, “I'd advice you to not attack my niece again. She may have just recently learned about being magical, but I've been a witch for many years now and I don't take kindly to those who hurt my loved ones.”
Francheska stared at Syrina, awe-struck.
“Just keep that in mind, deary. Well, I'll be going now. I have to go arrange some things and then I will be back later to take Valerie home. I trust she is in good hands.” At her last words, Syrina smiled at me. “Ta ta!”
Francheska just stood there, with her mouth hanging open.
After several moments, she regained her composure and said disgustedly, “Can you believe her?”
I just ignored her, walking back into Valerie's hospital room. Valerie was sitting up staring off into space, not noticing my presence.
“Valerie, are you okay?” I asked her, touching her arm which made her jump. “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you.”
“Oh. It's okay. I was so deep in thought that I didn't hear you come in.” She replied, tucking a strand of her dark brown hair behind her ear. Then, looking directly into my eyes she said, “My aunt told me that I'm a witch. Well, a magical being at least. My mother was a witch and my father was a magician. I just can't believe they never told me.”
She appeared as if she were about to cry again so I placed a hand on her shoulder for comfort. “I'm sorry they didn't tell you.”
“Thank you for being a friend to me, Jonah.” She told me, smiling and it made my heart rate increase slightly.
“Any time.” I smiled back.
It was at that moment that Francheska burst into the room, looking furious.
“Jonah, you must come immediately!” She declared, causing me to become alarmed.
“What's wrong, Francheska? Did something happen?” I asked her, walking over to the doorway and peering out into the hallway, looking right then left and then right again.
“You just need to come! I can't explain it right now!” She began to pull me out of the room.
