Chapter Nineteen: Catching Up

Peeta asked me to drive him home from hospital today and I agreed. I've been to visit him everyday since I went and apologised to him and every time I swear his smile gets bigger and brighter, and so does mine.

The awkwardness of what happened on the night of the accident has been completely forgotten and I can't even explain to anyone how amazing it is to have my best-friend back, it's almost as if we've not been apart... almost.

He's coping really well with his prosthetic leg but he's got one crutch to help him balance and support himself for now, he shouldn't need it in a week or so.

What's really surprised me is how easily the careers have accepted that Peeta and I are friends again and that the two groups are going to be spending time together because of it, in a way we've kind of become one group but there is a rift, Cato isn't happy with the situation, it's a big transition for him and he's not really the forgiving type. Apparently he's apologised to Peeta because there was a big argument after me and Finnick left but he's not speaking to any of the Victor's like they're his friends but it's not like we're his enemies anymore. I guess we could say he's being civil but to be honest I think he's only agreed to try and make things work because Clove did and the only reason Clove agreed is because Glimmer and Marvel were so up for it and she didn't want to lose all of her friends apart from one.

Glimmer and Marvel are such nice people, they've accepted all of us as though they've known us for years and they're a laugh to be around. They haven't been asking questions about why we fell out and didn't bother to talk to each other. Instead they've just accepted that it happened and that we've moved on, leaving it in the past.

Despite me going to see Peeta everyday we haven't really had a proper chance to catch up on what's gone on over the past few years and it's looking like we won't get a chance to catch up today because, unbeknownst to Peeta, we've arranged to throw him a surprise party. It was more the Careers idea but me and the rest of the Victor's have helped as much as we could and at least some of the Careers appreciated it. I'm pretty sure Cato just felt like we were getting in the way but how I see it is, the more time we're around him and Clove for, the more they'll realise we're not bad people to have as friends and they'll accept us in the way which Glimmer and Marvel have.

I pull up in my car outside Clove's house, Peeta is in the passenger seat and he looks a little confused as to why we're here and then something seems to click,

"You're all throwing my a surprise party aren't you?" When he says 'surprise' he does air quotation marks with both hands.

"Maybe, maybe not."

"You know that you're a terrible liar Katniss?"

"I am not!"

"Yes. Yes you are."

"Fine maybe I am but how did you know."

"Because before me and you made up Clove said that she wanted to throw me a party when I got out of hospital and I'm out of hospital and you haven't taken me to my own house even though you said you were and we happen to have just pulled up outside of Clove's house."

"Crap! She must have forgotten, we worked really hard and everything. Just act surprised, okay? Like you weren't expecting it."

"So. Much. Effort." He's taking the piss out of me there, I say that a lot when I can't be bothered to put in the effort to do something, well I used to say it a lot around Peeta and I've realised that I've started to say it more and more over the past couple of days. Let's face it there are a lot of things that I can't be bothered to do.

"Please just act surprised?"

"Hmmmm... I'll think about it?"

"No you won't just think about it. You'll do it."
