****Katniss' POV****
I look in the mirror, checking my reflection to make sure I look as good as I can for my senior prom.
I straighten out my prom dress one last time and I admire my beautiful prom dress. The theme is prince and princesses so I decided to let a princess inspire my dress, that princess was Ariel and I know that may sound stupid but it looks really nice. It's a green dress that starts of quite a light green at the top and grows in strength until it's a bluey-green at the bottom and what makes it better is that it's a mermaid style, that means it's very fitted until you get down to a little bit above my knees and then it kind of goes out, I'm not too sure how to describe it any better than that. I have near enough to no idea about fashion, just a basic concept of what matches and can be worn with what.
My hair is in a fishtail plait which Annie did for me. I was just going to do my hair in a normal side braid but she wouldn't allow it so instead I have a fishtail plait which is still on the side, let's just call it compromise.
Annie also did my make-up, she made it natural apart from green eyeshadow so I agreed with that. The only thing is that I don't have my normal eyeliner on which kind of annoys me but the room will be pretty dark anyway so it doesn't matter anyway.
The only jewellery I have on is my locket that I got for christmas, which now has a picture of my Mum and Dad rather than just my Dad in it as well as the one of Prim, and I also have my promise ring on.
I sit down and put on my white converse, I don't have any green ones but there is no way I'm wearing heels and these are the best option I had.
Just as I finish typing the laces I hear a knock on the door and I try to rush downstairs but the dress stops me from moving too quickly so I walk as quickly as I can and answer the door. I'm the only one in the house at the moment. I'm not at Jo's place, I got ready at Annie's and she left for Finnick's after she finished my hair and make-up so I've been here alone for a while.
Peeta is standing there and may I say, Peeta is looking hot tonight.
He step into the house and blocks me from seeing something outside,
"Peeta. What are you hiding?"
"You'll have to wait and see won't you?"
"I suppose so."
He fastens a corsage around my wrist and I look down at it,
"I know that it technically doesn't match your dress but I saw something similar to it and it reminded me of us, at the beach, watching the sunset so I thought you'd like it?"
It is a mixture of reds, oranges and yellows so I see what he means,
"I love it Peeta but not nearly as much as I love you."
I kiss him quickly,
"I love you too Kat."
I look at his outfit and see that he has a black suit on but under it his waistcoat type thing is a forest green and so is his bow tie,
"Annie helped me with the colours, I wanted us to match and she told me to go for forest green."
He's so sweet to have gone to trouble so that we match, not many guys would have even considered that.
He pulls out a blind fold from his pocket,
"Put this on, I have a surprise for you."
"If you mess up my hair Annie will beat you."
"Okay, I'll just cover your eyes with my hands."
He does and he leads me outside and until what he thinks is a suitable point to stop. He removes his hands and I look at what's in front of me, a carriage with white horses to pull it.
I gasp,
"You didn't have to do this Peeta."
He smiles,
"I know I didn't have to but I wanted to and seeing as the theme is Princesses and Princes I wanted only the best for my princess."
I kiss him again before he helps me into the carriage and then gets in beside me, as we set off I lean against him,
"How did I deserve you?" He chuckles,
"More like the other way around."
I say nothing, I could argue about it for hours but I want this night to be a nice night and as relaxing as prom can be.
We stay quiet for a few minutes until he says,
"You look beautiful tonight, I hope you know that."
I immediately find myself blushing, "You don't look too bad yourself."
"Oh really?"
"In fact, Mister Mellark, you look pretty damn hot tonight."
He says nothing in reply, just kisses my forehead.
We arrive outside and Peeta gets out of the carriage and then helps me out. He keeps hold of my hand as we walk into the venue which is beautifully decorated.
We go into prom to see a lot of people have already turned up but we still manage to find all of our group. Finnick and Annie came together and so did Cato and Glimmer but apart from that no one else, apart from me and Peeta obviously, came with anyone.
We greet each other and then go and find a table.
We sit there for a while not really doing anything until a slow song comes on and Peeta stands up, takes my hand and leads me to the dance floor.
I put my arms around his neck and his slip around my waist and we sway from side to side just enjoying each other's company. After a little while I lean my head on his shoulder,
"It's kind of ironic you know?"
"What do you mean Kat?"
"The thing that made me realise my true feelings for you, as in wanting to be in a relationship with you, was when Tich played Prince in disguise and I never mentioned it but you're my prince and now we're hear at prom and the theme is Prince and Princesses."
"It's funny how things work out like that and, of course, I feel as though you are my princess."
I pick my head up off his shoulder and kiss him,
"I love you."
"I love you too."
We dance to a few more songs and time really flies by because before I know it prom King and Queen are being announced.
"And now, it's time for the announcing of the Prom king and Queen." Principle Abernathy says into the microphone "but I will not be picking. Instead, please give a round of applause to everyone's favourite teacher, Mrs. Trinket." Everyone awkwardly claps as Miss Trinket bounces onto the stage. It's pretty obvious Haymitch wasn't for this, and she probably asked him about this when he was drunk. One thing about Haymitch though, is he stays true to his word.
"Welcome, welcome! Happy Prom everyone! I don't know if you know this, but this is the 74th prom our school has had." She is smiling like an idiot. It's true though, our high school has been around for a very long time.
"Now, it is time for the crowning of your Prom Queen and King." Everyone actually claps this time. Effie reaches into her pocket and pulls out the envelope with the names on it.
"Ladies first." She reaches in, pulling the paper out and her smile fades. She sighs into the microphone.
"Your prom queen is Katniss Everdeen." I stand shocked while everyone stares at me. I look to my group of friends and they all smirk at me. Of course they nominated me.
"I hate you all." I walk away from them and go to the stage, where Effie puts the crown on my head.
"And now," she seems more excited, "your prom king is.... Thresh Loy!" Thresh? I know the name and I know the face, but I don't know him personally.
Our Prom King walks up onto the stage and Effie crowns him too, everyone clears off the dance floor and I realise that I will have to dance in front of these people.... brilliant, just brilliant.
We walk forward and dance together but surprisingly it isn't too awkward so I decide to start a conversation, "Congratulations on your win."
He smiles a little, If that's what you'd call it. I'd prefer embarrassment... but nice embarrassment. I never realise I was popular enough to be Prom King."
I laugh a little,
"I don't know how I won, I'm seriously the most hostile and unfriendly person you'll ever meet."
"You seem to be okay now though."
"That's because I'm not trying."
"Exactly, you're not as bad as you'd think with being social."
I smile a little and the song ends, "Thanks Thresh."
He smiles at me,
"No problem Prom Queen." and then he leaves and goes back into the crowd, and presumably to his friends.
My friends walk over to me,
"Don't think that I enjoyed this... but thank you for nominating me you guys."
Cato smiles at me and says,
"No problem, we thought you deserved something nice to happen."
Then Finnick adds,
"Even if Miss Trinket doesn't agree."
I laugh, "What does she agree with? She never liked me to start with so the prank didn't help."
Johanna smirks,
"Oh wow, what an insightful deduction. Maybe you're not so brainless after all." She winks at me and then Peeta pulls me close to him,
"See you're a lot more popular than you think you are."
I shrug my shoulders,
"I don't care about being popular though. All I care about it having you and my friends around me."
The rest of the night flies by, I dance with Peeta to one more slow song and then we decide to call it a night.
Everyone goes and changes into some stuff to sleep in and grabs some clothes for tomorrow and then we all meet back at Johanna's and set up the front room for us to sleep in.
We all settle down pretty quickly and me and Peeta snuggles together on the couch,
"Thank you for a great evening."
He kisses the top of my head,
"No problem. Now get some sleep, tomorrow is going to be quite a busy day too."
I am about to ask him why just as I realise that in all of the romance and excitement of Prom I forgot that I turn eighteen tomorrow!
I glance at the clock and see that it's already 11:50 pm and I think he sees that too because then he says,
"Mind you, what's the harm in staying up for another ten minutes?"
We stay up until is exactly midnight, we are the only ones awake so he whispers,
"Happy eighteenth Kat." And then he kisses me and before I know it we're both asleep.
