Maria's Point of view

Maria raced toward the end of the valley where she knew the entrance to the Dwarves' mountain city was. The Surdans had told her that was where she would find the Varden. She thought about where she had been raised and wondered if they would even let her join them. She had decided a long time ago that she hated her father and would do whatever she could to stop his tyranny over Alegasia. When she was younger he had taught her the basics of magic and had said that if she would serve him he would teach her more. But she had already known of the terrible things her father had done to get his position.

She had somehow managed to escape Urû'baen and make it to her destination but she knew that she was most likely being pursued by the Ra'zac. She knew her father didn't want her to join his enemies. She had never wanted to serve him but what made her leave for the Varden was when she discovered a third egg her father had hidden away in the palace. When she touched it the egg had started shaking slightly. When this happened she was shocked and she realized that she would also be a rider. But she didn't stay in the room for long she knew that by removing the egg she had probably set off a bunch of enchantments that would alert her father that the egg had been removed.

She raced to her room packed some of her clothes, some money, her bow, her quiver, and her sword. Her father had insisted on her learning to defend herself so if the Varden ever made it to Urû'baen she would be able to defend herself and his rule. Once she had packed she raced out of the palace through a secret exit that very few people knew about. She didn't think that anyone knew that she knew it existed. She had raced out of Urû'baen on her horse which she had quickly gotten from the stables. She knew that her father would send men after her and possibly even the Ra'zac once he realized that it had been her who took the Dragon egg. She couldn't believe that she had made it this far. When she reached the end of the valley she grabbed a rock banged it on the rocks in front of her and shouted aí varden abr du shur'tugalar gata vanta, (a warden of the Riders lacks passage). She waited for a minute wondering if they would let her in and then a door opened where previously there had just been rock.
