"As you have obviously noticed there are only eight of you. You were the eight strongest fighters, the smartest, the quickest, the most adapt, and the most likely to succeed." I straightened up at the last part actually wanting to hear what the lieutenant general was talking about. "The best suited to benefit each other. Work together! Your neighbor is no longer your enemy but your best asset and your only friend never forget that." He stopped as the plane landed and we stepped off. I looked around at my new "friends" there was Lane and Kallum both looking dashingly handsome, then tree trunk arms, who liked to be called Blaine but I liked my name more. There was Heathe, the essential, Misty, the girl that could disappear, Saphrina, a gypsy that apparently used to palm read and could now see your past and your most immediate future and Danika, a water steer. I really didn't see how we were going to be each other's assets as far as I could tell we were as different as night and day from each other.
A fifteen hour flight and all we got was that we were the best of the best, a map pointing us in the direction of where our new facility was, and a pat on the back. What crap! Oh and I couldn't forget about the smelly old van that we were currently stuck in! It shook as we rounded a corner as if to back my opinion. Even after the bazillion hour flight we were told it was another six hour drive and a day's hike to the facility. It was a good thing we slept on the way here! No one had money and they sure hadn't offered us any! We each had a gps anklet and were told if we left the maps marked path, any of us, we would be found and eliminated. Kallum had hoped into the van and asked Heathe to be his guide, which made sense given that he was a freaking Essential! I was still jazzed about that. Lane and Misty had gotten stuck in the back with Danika and it became obvious it was love at first sight or at least lust at first sight. They whispered and laughed, shared powers to see how much they thought they would connect then tried to mentally battle leading them to almost kissing each other. I all but puked! Blaine thankfully separated them, energy, with a pointed finger snap and told them if they crossed his border he was going to stick one of them on the roof. I instantly liked him.
"Thank you." I mouthed his way. He smiled a big smile, but everything about him was big, including his hilarious Texas drawl, which fit him in an odd way.
"No problem." He mouthed back. "I'm Blaine." He whispered.
"Grace. You can call me G, Grace is a little too.....nice....for me. Plus I like to pretend you're calling me a gangsta." He burst out laughing shaking the rickety old van.
"Hey Grace could you NOT make Blaine do that again at least as long as we are in this car." Kallum called from up front watching me in his rearview window.
"Not a problem." I turned back to Blaine. "Hey could you not do that again or else they might tie ME to the roof." He covered his mouth but the van still shook. I looked up toward Kallum who was still watching me. "Sorry." I mouthed to him.
"Why don't you just stop flirting!" He shot back through clenched teeth.
"I am not flirting!" That hurt. I was just trying to be friendly. I turned back to Blaine who was watching me and Kallum with interest.
"You guys dating or what?" He whispered.
"What?! No-"
"Yes." Kallum interrupted. "She is off limits. Stay away." He stared me down stopping me from correcting his crazy ass. Blaine's eyebrows shot up disbelief written on his face.
"Want me to fight him?" He drawled softly, too softly. He was okay with the idea of beating the crap out of Kallum for me, wanted it even! It was kind of sweet.
"Not while he's driving." I whispered back with a smile and a wink.
"Anytime big boy." I heard Kallum murmur from up front his focus, thankfully, back on the road.
