Kept in the Dark - Chapter 14

"Dexter?" I whispered. Concern from him hit me like a brick wall. Wow the man sure was emotional over me. "We can't-I can't-we can't- Kallum is tied to me. I don't know how but I need to be there for him and the whole you know-sexual thing-yeah well I guess that's just part of it so you know, I can't just, you know, turn it off. And I can't just leave him like I want to so me and you, we can't, well I mean, I can't hurt you like that." I stumbled out. Dexter smiled.

"Is that all? I thought you were going to say that you were dying or something. I told you I was going to wait. I can handle the pain." He finished lightly laughing. I closed my eyes pain hitting me. That wasn't what I meant. I sighed.

"That wasn't what I meant Dexter. I - me and Kallum we are" I felt sick. "Apparently we are meant to be together like.......Kate Brewster and John Conner." I winced-I really didn't want to use that example but I don't think he would understand with any other one. He stilled his eyes darkening.

"What do you mean?" His deep voice had taken a deadly turn and came out frighteningly still. No-no-no this was the part I didn't want to have to say. The part that was going to smash and kill and crack and bleed.

"It means that I can't have anyone near me until I have figured this whole thing out. It means we can't be together right now. Possibly ever. According to

Saphrina. I have to help him. He needs me and I" I gulped and forced out the words." I need him." My heart hurt, my throat ached and my head pounded. I didn't want to say that. Dexter backed away slowly, hurt.

"I can't control this Dexter! I'm sorry I wish I could. I would choose you." The lie felt like fire in my mouth. I shouldn't have said that. I didn't really mean it. Yeah I liked him but he was like a piece of string compared to handcuffs there just wasn't any comparison. Dexter shook his head in understanding apparently my lie made him feel better.

"You don't mean that Grace but the fact that you said it shows how much you care. I can appreciate that." He turned and strode away. Yeah don't try to lie to a genius not only do they see right through it but they can also see why you would lie. I slumped down. I couldn't go after him and make the pain go away. I couldn't do anything but sit and wait. Wait for Kallum. Wait for our moment. Wait to die. Whichever came first.

General Shaif called us to attention and explained how training was going to go. We were going to train each other. There was a list of who was teaching what but it was up to us to find our own partners. Because pay back is a bitch I was paired with Kallum to teach fighting when I asked General Shaif why he mumbled something about me being all about the offense and Kallum was all about defense so we made a good pair. I almost attacked him right then and there.

A good pair!??!?!?! Ridiculous. We had to have locks installed because of us! The man was frickin crazy! That or very smart. I will admit he seemed to know what he was talking about. He had Lane in charge of learning to focus your energy. Blaine in charge of being able to separate your energy from your extra.

Heathe and Sarah teaching weaponry (I thought they should have taught fighting given that they are essentials) and Saphrina was not really teaching she was more like the person that you go to just to kind of enhance your extra. I don't know what that was all about but apparently she has studied as much as there is to study and has just worked with a lot of people period.

There was an hour break for lunch and a two hour block to work on our personal abilities. We had a vehicle training course on Saturday and would be spending all next week in town. I was honestly excited I wanted to go on missions and find bad guys, see how my powers work on people, all the normal stuff.

I jogged over toward the barn in the back yard where weaponry was being taught. Heathe and Sarah were handing out guns. Great guns. Awesome. I hope I don't accidently shoot John Conner. We were each handed a different weapon ranging from a simple hand gun to a powerful rifle and shotgun.
