Chapter 12: The Road to Recovery

Lucy's P.O.V.

I was just about to get out of my truck when my phone rang. It was Natsu's number. I picked up, but there was a strange voice on the other end of the line. "Is this Lucy Heartfilia?" the voice asked. "Y-Yes." I replied, a little worried. "We understand that you are Natsu Dragneel's girlfriend. We called to tell you that he got into a crash and is in the Emergency Room right now." the voice explained. I didn't bother to argue about not being his girlfriend because he was in the friggin' E.R. 

I hung up and started up the ignition. I was speeding to the hospital, way over the speed limit and got five tickets from five different cops, but I didn't care. He's been through so much...what if he lets go? I thought. But that thought only made me even more determined to get there. I went faster. 

When I finally got there, I parked carelessly and hopped out of my truck. I grabbed the keys and locked it. After that I ran into the hospital. But all of that went by in a blur. I had to sit in the waiting room, because only family could visit. But Natsu didn't have any family besides Happy, but they said he was too young. 

He sat right next to me. "Are you Natsu's girlfriend?" he asked through his silent cries. I didn't feel like explaining, so I just nodded. "And you're Happy?" I asked. He nodded. "What happened? Why don't you have any injuries?" I asked. And Happy explained how Natsu shielded him. 

I hugged him after his explanation. Happy was crying so hard, I was surprised the place hasn't flooded. "Happy, he'll be perfectly fine. I promise." I said, although I wasn't sure of it myself. 

Finally, after two weeks, they let us see him. I never left the hospital. I bought food and water from the vending machines for Happy and I. I told Father what happened, but he didn't bother to come. When they let us visit, I let Happy go in alone. He's Natsu's little brother, and only family member. 

Happy's P.O.V.

I slowly walked into Natsu's hospital room, and I saw him awake, but hooked up to all kinds of machines. "Natsu!" I shouted. I ran to his side, but I didn't hug him in case of making any injuries worse.

Natsu smiled a weak smile. "It's good to know I still have family." he said so quietly, it was barely a whisper. "It's ok." I replied. "What?" he asked. "You said sorry right before the crash. It's ok." I explained. After twenty minutes, I walked out of the room and told Lucy that he wanted to see her.

Lucy's P.O.V.

I walked in and saw Natsu laying on the hospital bed with a bandage around his right arm, all the way up to his shoulder. He had a cast on his left leg, and there was a bandage around his ribs. "Hey Luce." Natsu greeted with a weak smile. "Hey Natsu." I replied. 

I noticed how Natsu winced every time he breathed in. It was hard not to notice. I noticed how it was hard for him to keep his eyes open. It was hard for him to talk. "Natsu, go to sleep." I said. "But then I can't see you." he replied. I smiled at that. "You can see me in your dreams. Now sleep, it will help you." I replied. 

Natsu tried to sigh, but it hurt him too much, so he just nodded and closed his eyes. After a few seconds, I could hear his breathing try to regulate. He fell asleep. I walked out of the room and toward Happy. "He needs his rest. How about you come stay at my house until he's better?" I asked. Happy just nodded and we both climbed into my truck and drove home.
