"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"Pretty please?"
"No."
"Pretty pretty please?"
"Go away Potter. I still have to finish homework."
James Potter had been pestering Lily Evans to go with him to a dance that a few 7th years put up to earn money for new Astronomy equipment. This was only available for 6th and 7th years, and it cost a Galleon for entry.
James wanted to go, however, he didn't have a date, and he feared he would look silly standing there all by himself (Peter was in the hospital wing after suffering from a nasty cold, Sirius had made some unintelligible excuse to not go, and Remus said he preferred to stay and study for an Ancient Runes exam). So the only option left was to ask Lily, who eventually relented, after saying she couldn't stand James's endless whining.

"So, how do I look?" asked James on the night of the dance, striking a pose for Remus, who was sitting in the Gryffindor common room.Remus glanced up briefly at James in his black dress robes, said," Nice," then went back to his Ancient Runes textbook.
"Seriously, Moony? This is Evans I'm going out on a date with! Give me some good feedback!"
Remus looked up, this time for five seconds, then said, "Nice," and went back to studying.
"You are hopeless," huffed James.

"Do you like the purple dress or the green dress?" asked Lily as she held each one up."Definitely the green one," said Alice Fortescue, who was helping Lily get ready. "It really brings out your eyes."
Lily put on the dress, then went back to Alice and gave a little twirl.
"What do you think?"
The dress itself was nothing fancy, just a simple knee-length gown with silver thread woven through the fabric. On Lily, however, it was stunning, the color really accentuating her eyes.
"James will faint when he sees you," said Alice.
"I don't want that!" said Lily.
"Because you'd rather he kiss you," Alice said as she handed Lily a pair of earrings.
"Who does Lily want to kiss?" asked Marlene Mckinnon, as she entered the seventh year girls' dormitories, carrying a dark blue dress.
"Potter, of course," said Alice.
"Really?"
"When did I ever say that I liked Potter in that way?" said Lily, growing exasperated. "I only agreed to go with him because we're friends now!"
"I found out that roughly ⅔ of Head pairings become a couple," said Emmeline Vance from her bed, who was watching the scene rather amusedly.
"Ha! Good job Emmeline!" said Alice.
"Emmeline, were you doing research to find the probability of Potter and I ending up together?" asked Lily.
Marlene and Alice snickered.
"Maybe," Emmeline muttered.
Lily scowled, and pulled her hair up, planning to just put it into a simple bun for the dance. However, Marlene stopped her, and she pulled out her makeup kit and hairbrush, muttering something about blind lovers as she started pulling her brush through Lily's hair.
