Pete's pov

Sparks. That's all I felt when we kissed. I pulled back and Dee ran out of the room and I grabbed my phone and shoved it in my pocket running after her.

Rain pounded down around us as I grabbed her hand pulling her to a stop. She faced me saying,

"Go away. I need to think."

"No! Deanna don't you get it!? I've known you a day and I'm starting to fall for you! And you're starting to fall for me! Why else would you let me in when you haven't even let your best friend in!?" I exclaimed.

She shook her head whispering, "I don't know okay. Let's just go back to Liz's. I'll deal with all of this in the morning."

I nodded and pulled her gently to my car. Once she was in the passenger seat I raced around and slipped into the driver's seat. I started blasting the heaters and I turned on the radio. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and realized it was still on call with Patrick and Liz. I quickly hung up as Deanna whispered,

"Do you still want to see my back? I mean when we get to Liz's?"

My hand found hers as I replied, "Yeah."

She nodded and I pulled into Liz's driveway. She doesn't live that far. We got outside and I took my jacket off and draped it around her shoulders. She looked up at me with thankful eyes and I pulled her to the door. I was about to open it when it flew open making us jump. Patrick dragged me inside and Liz grabbed Deanna. They got us both towels and made us sit on the couch. Liz ran a hand through her messy hair demanding,

"What the hell is going on?! Why the hell was there a flat line on a hospital monitor!?"

Deanna curled into a ball and whispered, "My mom died."

Liz hugged her as did Patrick and me.

Liz hugged her tighter asking, "How?"

Deanna looked down whispering, "She's been sick. For years now. Umm her and my dad were home one night. There was a break in. I was over here. My mom hurt hurt. And when they took her to the hospital they found out she had cancer. That's why I disappeared all the time. Pete's the only one who knew and she found out today. That's why the hospital called. My mom got worse. We were hanging out, Pete stepped out of the room to take a call. My mom flat lined." Patrick hugged her closer and she moved closer to him. I felt a twinge of jealousy but I knew that Patrick was just trying to be a good friend. But there's something he's not telling me. I'll ask him later. He'll tell me.

I stood up saying, "Deanna can I talk to you in private?" She nodded standing up carefully. I took her hand and lead her to the hall way bathroom. I locked the door behind us and whispered,

"Turn around and show me your back." She nodded and I carefully lifted her shirt to just below her shoulder blades. I stepped back with wide eyes. She had a huge bruise across her back. Not to mention a few small scars. I gently ran my fingers tips along it so I was barely touching it and she winced. I pulled her shirt back down and spun her around. I hugged her gently whispering,

"Who did this? Did Gabe do it? I'll kill that son of a bitch."

She shook her head whispering, "I fell down the stairs at my house. My dad wasn't home. He had left for work. And I was too lazy to turn on a light to go downstairs and get water from the kitchen. I slipped and fell. Nothing big." I nodded saying,

"Okay. Hey it's getting late we should get some sleep." She nodded and I unlocked the door and we walked to our bags and grabbed clothes. Then we parted ways to get changed. While Liz and Sophomore Stump stayed in the living room talking.
