Chapter 26

It was getting close to the end of summer. The boys felt weird being around Benny and Emma because they had been friends for a while and now we're together. Benny had surprised Emma and took her to the drive in where she had been wanting to go all summer. The boys tagged along too.

"How much farther?" Smalls asked for the a millionth time. "Just another block and we're there." Benny said. He lead the way of the group holding Emma's hand. Emma felt bad for River even though he was doing okay. He followed Marcus and Kevin. Aaron was with Shay and the rest of the girls were together. Smalls turned around and watched Hailee. "Woah..." Smalls said to himself oozing over her. Could he make it anymore cringey and obvious? Benny heard and looked over at him trying not to laugh. "She's beautiful..." he continued not realizing he was talking out loud and not in his head. Marcus and Ryan caught on. "Smalls who are ya looking at?" Ryan said. "Uh, no one. Just looking around." he said caught off guard and instantly turning red. He wanted to tell his friends but he didn't want them to embarrass him as they already were. Poor kid.

As they approached the drive in the smile on Emma's face grew bigger. She stood there staring because she had always wanted to go to a drive in and had never been before. Benny came up from behind her and slid his hands around her waist and she grabbed his hands. "So do you wanna go home now?" He said sarcastically. "Yeah I don't know why you brought me here." She said back.

They all sat together and watched the movie. Emma sat close to Benny with her legs across his lap. He played with the threads of the holes in her ripped jeans. The boys fooled around here and there throughout the movie. They really felt like sixties kids. All old cars were parked Emma didn't see one modern-looking car. There was another diner on the other side of the drive in.

Girls walked by giggling and smiling. They were staring at Benny. He awkwardly smiled and smiled even more when he saw Emma roll her eyes. "It's okay." He said with the smile that he did when he was either about to laugh or trying not to laugh. "I know." She said wrapping her arm around his. She knew it didn't mean anything but she hated when other girls flirted and stared at Benny. It always made her feel insecure. "Don't worry about them." He said. They were the same girls that always flirted with him at the games. "Did they always do that? Even before I moved here?"
"Sometimes but not all the time. They are really annoying honestly." He said. Emma looked at them. "They are still looking, why the hell are they still looking?"
She said getting annoyed.
"I don't know and I don't care cause I'm looking at you." He said pulling her into him making her turn red.

They kissed and were interrupted by the boys. "Ewwwww!" Smalls, Harry and Ryan said at the same time. "Oh shut up blockheads." Benny said. "Get a room or something." Harry said laughing. "Real mature guys." Emma said. "Not everyone wants to see that you know." Smalls said. "Yeah well I'm sure you'd love to do that to Hailee." Benny said smirking. "Shhh!" Smalls said turning red. "Wait.. what?" Ryan said laughing some more. Oh shit. Smalls looked like a deer in the headlights he was literally frozen as Hailee looked over at him. "What?" She said. Now everyone was confused. Benny made everything awkward now realizing he should not have blurted out what he just said. Now all the attention was on them. Emma felt awkward and didn't know what to do or say. Smalls stood there for a few moments and ran off. "Shit." Benny said to Emma. "What do we do?"
"He's just being shy. He'll come back." She said. "Uh, what the hell just happened?" Marcus said. "Don't worry about it he's fine."
"What did you say that almost made him shit himself?" Aaron said. "It's nothing. Really."
"Is he okay? I heard my name." Hailee said. "Oh yeah Benny was just..." Emma honestly didn't know what to say. "He was just messing with Smalls and he had enough of it. I don't know where he went." She said truthfully. The boys knew it was bull shit and caught on right away that Smalls had a crush on Hailee. Not that it was a big deal but Smalls really didn't want them to know.
