"Aolani, mom says its time to wake up." my little sister yelled, bursting into my room. She jumped up onto my bed, tearing off my blanket in the process.
"Lanie, get off." i mumbled, i pushed her to the side and grabbed my blanket and pulled it back up onto me. I closed my eyes and tried to shove her away.
"Mom says she needs your help in the market today and she needs you downstairs now." She said, pulling my blanket again.
"Okay, fine, im coming. Get out of my room please." I said, sitting up, gentely pushing Lanie off.
Lanie is 9 years old, a third grader at Pu'u Kukui Elementary school, along with my other sister, Kanani, who is 11, and a fifth grader. They both are very tan, have dark brown hair, but very bright highlights from the sun exposure. They both looked very different from me, their dark eyes and dark features versus my light blonde hair, and my bright blue eyes and freckled face. Even my brother Nikolao, who is 15 has darker complexion. The only thing i really have inn common with my siblings is the darker tone to our skin, we are all very tan, most likely from the sun.
I pushed Lanie out of my room and I shut and locked the door behind me. I wanted a moment of peace before I had to go to the family market.
My mom started her own fruit and vegetable market a few years ago. It is mostly family run, and I am usually the cashier on the weekends. Over the summer, however, I work most days.
As i got ready, i could hear my mother and siblings making breakfast downstairs. I glanced at my desk clock. 6:30 am on a Saturday morning. The sun was shining, the beautiful mid-May breeze came into my room through the window above my bed. The air was clear and smelled like salt water.
The best part of living so close to the beach is the opportunity to go out with my friends almost every single day.
I picked up my phone, and I had a single text message from my best friend, Haley, who just recently moved to Maui with her family. She was originally from Texas, so she is use to the heat, but she has never really been to the beach.
I opened my phone and pulled up my messaging app, Haley had texting me a little less than ten minutes ago.
"hey, wanna hit the beach today?" it read.
I smiled, thinking about how nice it would be to go to the beach later today. I texted back:
"I'd love to, gotta work at the market for a few hours. Ill text you when im done! :)"
I set my phone on my desk and dressed in my typical outfit that consists of a tee shirt, shorts and a pair of flip flops that are so tattered up, mainly because i have worn them every single day since i first bought them.
I walked downstairs to the kitchen, where my siblings were, or so i thought.
My mom and dad were sitting at the counter, just them. i walked downstairs and entered in and saw them. They looked sad.
"Mom, dad whats wrong?" I asked, beginning to feel anxious.
"Aolani, sit down, we wanna talk to you about something." My mom said, nodding her head to the seat across from her."Whats wrong?" I sat down across from them and they looked solemn. "Is someone dead?"
My mom chuckled, and my dad smiled.
"No, we just need to tell you something." My dad said.
"Okay, whats up?" my heart began to pound harder. My palms were sweaty and I felt kind of faint.
"Aolani, theres something we have been keeping from you." My mom said.
Now the confusion set in. What could they be keeping thats so important?
"Aolani, you're adopted." My dad said.
For just a moment, I swear the world stopped.
