As Luke promised, he headed to the store after I unpacked my clothing into the dresser and closet. I sat in the living room where he'd set up Sophia's chair, and held her hand as she slept, still hooked up to an IV that continued to hydrate her, as she'd been unable to keep down food or water for several days.
I turned the TV on to some cooking show, needing only the company of another voice to keep me from being nervous, essentially alone in an unfamiliar house at night. When Luke returned, I followed him into the kitchen where he unpacked loads of groceries, including hot chocolate mix, baguette, grapes, cans of soup, apples, cheese, ice cream, frozen pizza, cake mix, frosting, crackers, milk, eggs, bread, and the promised shower supplies.
I thanked him for his hospitality, to which he told me it was the least he could do, considering I was caring for Sophia while he went back to work and everything. I offered to sleep on the couch so as to be closer to Sophia.
"Nonsense," he said. "I'll care for her at night and when I can during the day, or you just cover for me when I'm not home. Deal?" Hesitantly, I agreed to this, and told him I wouldn't mind taking a turn in the couch if he needed me to.
After some debate, he pulled a pillow and blanket out of a closet I hadn't even noticed in the entryway, and got comfortable on the couch as I made my way upstairs. Luke told me he was leaving for work at 7:30, so I plugged in my phone and set the alarm for 5:30, to give me time to dress and shower before he left. I also planned to make him a breakfast, and Sophia too, of she was awake at that hour.
I slept soundly through the night, but woke slightly confused when my alarm went off and my eyes opened in an unfamiliar room. After a moment, I recalled where I was, and sat up in the large bed. I checked my phone, then got up and began running a warm bath, adding some bath salts Luke had purchased for me. As the tub filled, I brushed my teeth and set my clothing for the day on an empty shelf next to the sink. I chose a soft rock Playlist on my phone, then I turned off the water, dropped my pajamas onto the floor, and climbed into the warm water.
I didn't linger too long, washing my body and hair first then shaving my legs as an afterthought. As I drained the water, I grabbed a soft white towel and wrapped it around my body, and another around my hair. Luke told me I didn't have to worry about wearing scrubs everyday, that he didn't care. Even still, I packed several pairs. Today, however, I put on a floral sundress and a pair of white flats. My hair was only to my shoulders, and I could blow-dry it easily in 10 minutes. After I did so, I applied mascara and made my way downstairs. As I entered the kitchen, could hear the sound of music coming from the bathroom as Luke showered, and laughed to myself, noticing it was the same Playlist I'd had on upstairs.
Great minds...
I rummaged through the fridge and decided to make french toast. Luke exited the bathroom in a towel, and blushed as he walked past to make his way upstairs. I laughed and called after him, "Breakfast in ten!"
In no longer than ten minutes, I set a healing plate of french toast on the counter just as Luke entered the room wearing a Navy suit, with his hair combed somewhat neatly, unlike the other times I'd seen him. As he walked into the kitchen, he fiddled with his jacket sleeves before he spotted the food I'd made. As soon as he saw it, his eyes widened and smiled at me, saying a quick but sincere thank you before digging in.
"Sorry I didn't make coffee," I said.
"That's alright, " Luke saod between bites. "I used to drink coffee, but I moved here and forgot to buy a coffee maker, so I've switched to drinking hot chocolate." I laughed at that, as I cleaned up the small mess I'd made on the counter. I heated up some milk and stirred hot chocolate mix into it, then poured it into a travel mug for Luke to bring to work.
"Where do you work?" I asked him.
He paused briefly, before peaking into the living room to see that Sophia was still asleep.
"I work at a web-markering company," he said. "But don't let Soph know. She thinks I work for the CIA or something exciting like that," he laughed.
I laughed too, as I handed him the travel mug and the briefcase he'd set on a chair.
"I feel like I should kiss your forehead or something," he said.
I laughed, confused and asked, "Why?"
"I don't know," he replied. "Just feels like you're my wife or something." His cheeks turned light pink as he giggled and looked down at the floor. I smiled at him. "Have a good day at work," I said. Then he was out the door with one last smile and wave.
A/n: goizzz, pretty soon we're gonna be seeing some special guests appear at Luke's house! ;) Any guesses?? Comment and let me know. Also, the scene at the end where he says he feels like she's his wife- I originally had this happen later on in the book but I felt like it fit better here. Anyway. Love ya, thank you so much if you're still reading this. <3
P.S. It's after 2am and I can't be bothered to check my spelling so I'll check through it tomorrow, forgive my inevitable mistakes.
