Before Luke left, he promised to text me a list of instructions for the TV and anytbing else I might need.
I didn't have a clue what to do with myself most of the day. Sophia was still on morphine and therefore slept for hours on end, and in her waking hours, she only wanted to watch movies. This was fine for the most part, except when I had to change her IV bag. She hated the way it felt when the cold liquid began running from her elbow to her heart, and from there, to the rest of her body.
I put her at ease by telling her a story about when I was her age and went to the hospital with a broken arm. I told her about how I picked a pink cast and all my friends signed it, but then while I was asleep my brother scribbled out all the names. It was a lame story, but it took her attention long enough for me to change the bag without too much of a fight.
Since Sophia hadn't eaten anything since I'd been here, I told her I'd make her anything she wanted. after a few moments of critical thinking, she told me she wanted strawberry shortcake, which she said was her favorite food. I went into the kitchen and as I opened the fridge, I noticed a piece of paper taped to it with a recipe for angel food cake and whipped cream. I followed the recipe for the cake and put it on the oven, admiring how Luke took the time to learn how to make her favorite food from scratch.
While the cake was baking, I stemmed and sliced the strawberries in the fridge and put them in a bowl with some sugar, then covered it. I found heavy cream in the fridge, and whipped it up with some sugar and vanilla, in the blue stand mixer I found in a cupboard. When the cake was done, I set it aside to cool and checked on Sophia, whom I found coloring in her special chair.
"Do you wanna watch a movie?" I asked excitedly.
"Yes! Frozen!" She replied. I loved Frozen, and was happy with her suggestion. Luke had texted me the instructions for the TV, and after reading them over, I opened a drawer under the TV and turned on the Xbox like he told me. I grabbed a remote and followed his directions to Amazon Movies. I put Frozen on, and returned to the kitchen to finish Sophia's breakfast.I found a pale pink ceramic bowl and put a large slice of angel food cake in the bottom of it. I topped it with a few spoonfuls of strawberry slices, and finished it with a big scoop of whipped cream. Proud of myself and the beautiful dish, I snapped a picture of it and sent it to Luke.
I brought the bowl to Sophia and her face lit up at the sight of it. As she ate, I cleaned the mess in the kitchen before returning to watch the movie with her in the living room.
A few minutes later, as Olaf sang about summer, my phone vibrated in my pocket and I opened the new message from Luke.
Oh my god thank you- you're perfect. Send me more pictures!
I smiled and looked over at Sophia, who'd fallen asleep with her bowl in her lap. I took a picture and sent it to Luke. Almost immediately, he replied:
Awwww! It's so hard to be away from her today. It feels good knowing you're taking care of her.
I stood up and set my phone on the couch, then carefully retretived the bowl from Sophia's hands and washed it in the kitchen.
I double checked that everything was clean, and returned to the living room. I checked my phone and had two new messages from Luke.
Btw- feel free to make yourself at home. And as long as Sophia doesn't need anything you can nap or whatever. Thanks again so much.
Our home is your home.
I replied with a smiley face emoji and said, Of course Luke, I'm happy to be able to help. I've grown quite fond of her. Xx
