A/N Two months. Two goddamn months and I come out with this short, cliché nonsense I ought to stab myself in the goddamn foot somebody find me a knife I'm going to fucKInG FIGHT MYSELF

The twins were very nervous, though one of them certainly didn't look it. Both were seated at a booth in the same diner they'd taken Kyoko too several months ago – she'd confided that it was her favourite place to eat. The food there was cheap and full of fat, and it was delicious in that salty, unhealthy way a lot of cheap foods were.

Speaking of Kyoko, she had had texted them the night before with an address, a time, and at the bottom was a string of red heart emoji. Small though it was, the little images were a sign that maybe things would be okay for the three of them. So they waited on one side of the booth, holding hands tightly under the table to reassure one another. It was still fairly early, and the restaurant was slowly filling up with more and more people coming in for lunch, or hoping to be in time for the breakfast special.

The twins fixed their on the glass door, until finally they spotted two familiar figures walking towards the building. There was the soft sound of chimes, and then Kyoko step through the door.

As though drawn by some invisible rope, Kyoko's head turned instinctively in their direction. They stared back at her just as fixedly, as though she was the only thing that mattered in the entire building – well, that wasn't quite true, but she was the most important thing to them at least. She was dressed in one of the dresses they'd given her – a dark blue thing that fell to her knees, and tightened just underneath her chest – under a grey coat. They would have stared for much longer had her mother not strode in behind her.

Kyoko was forced to tear her eyes away from the twins to look at her mother when the older woman said something to her. Her face was tilted down so they couldn't make out her expression, but she nodded at whatever her mother had said and, after shooting one more longing glance over at the twins, she joined the small line at the front of the diner to place an order.

Sharp heels clacked loudly on the tiled floor as Kotone made her way over to their booth and dropped down in the seat opposite them. She placed her bag on the table and sighed softly. Up close, they could see the dark circles under dull eyes, and the tenseness of the skin around her lips. She looked tired, but resolute, and she fixed them both with a hard stare.

"Let's make this quick, alright?" She snapped curtly. "Why are you dating my daughter?"

"What?"

"Don't play dumb. It doesn't suit you," Kotone replied, leaning back and folding her arms across her chest. "Why are you dating my daughter? My daughter is intelligent, and she likes you two for some reason, but I don't. I don't know either of you, and I don't trust you or this relationship you have, so convince me or leave."

Hikaru blushed at the revelation that Kyoko liked them. It wasn't really a big shock, after all she had agreed to date them, but still! They shared a glance, not entirely sure how to respond to this woman who had all reason not to trust them all things considered. Hiding a relationship was one thing, but hiding a relationship with two twin boys was a whole other kettle of fish.

"Well..." Kaoru started slowly, being the more diplomatic of the two. "At first we were interested in Kyoko because she could tell us apart. No one's ever been able to do that except Haruhi, and around her it felt less like we were completely interchangeable, and more like she saw us as us."

"Yeah, Kyoko really gets us," Hikaru added, getting revved up. "She's the best thing that's ever happened to either of us! She's kind and sweet and really smart and honestly too good for us..." he trailed off for a moment, expression growing slightly distant as he thought about it.
