Chapter 17
“Ally,” I heard Cooper whispering in my ear and felt his hand gently caressing my hair.
“Hmm?” I replied with a groan and ran my hand up his chest absentmindedly. I felt his other arm tighten around my waist as I listened to his heart beat, which was strong against my ear.
“I heard some voices downstairs, I think it’s the police,” he replied in a hushed tone, causing me to stiffen against him. He pulled back a little and wrapped his arms around me so that his chin was resting on my head and my arm was wrapped around his side.
“I’m not ready for this, Coop,” I answered into his top and he kissed the top of my head, rubbing my back in a steady motion.
“I know, Al and I’m so sorry but this is a good thing, I promise,” he soothed but I felt that his heart was going at one hundred miles an hour, just like mine.
“I know it is. I just don’t want to get him into too much trouble.”
It was Cooper that stiffened that time and I sighed, pushing myself up from him and untangling my legs from the sheets.
“I really don’t understand why not, he hurt you, Al,” he said with sadness in his eyes. He grabbed my hand and ran his thumb over my skin before pulling me to him for a kiss. I settled comfortably and opened my mouth for him. We were just getting into the kiss when I heard a bang on the door and Sadie’s muffled voice through the wood.
“Cooper, Ally, there’s some people downstairs that want to meet you both,” her voice sounded nervous and on edge, just making my body tremble more.
“Okay!” Cooper called back and sat up, before turning back to me. “It’s okay, just get dressed and we’ll go down together.”
I nodded, moving over to the bathroom so that I could put my clothes from the day before on.
When I had used Cooper’s mouth wash and brushed my hair, I made my way back into Cooper’s room and into his arms.
“Let’s go.”
The walk down the stairs seemed to go on for ages, each one felt like a step closer to my new life.
When we got into the front room, I entered first. I wasn’t about to spend the time hiding behind people, but when I walked through the door I wished that I had stayed behind Cooper.
Victor was stood by the window and there were two men that I didn’t recognise stood with him. One was a tall man with long blonde hair that was tied back in a ponytail; the other was a short, plump man with a shaven head. Both of them tried to smile at me, but it came out as more of a grimace.
“Good morning, Miss Scythe, my name is Inspector Marks and I am here on behalf of the Child Protection Services.”
The taller man stepped forward and held his hand out to me, which I shook before stepping back against Cooper.
“Good morning,” I said as confidently as I could. I didn’t really know what else to say so Victor cleared his throat with a small smile.
“Inspector Marks is here to ask you some questions about your situation with your father,” he replied with the same professional tone that he had used with me the day before.
