"so Ross, who visited you yesterday?" Pete asked me at lunch the following day.
I shake my head not wanting to answer, "no one. it was a misunderstanding."
"whatever. anyways, you met the new kids I see?" he motions to Tyler and another guy with red hair.
"I've only met Joseph." I say looking over at him on my right.
"you're his bunk mate right?" I asked motioning to the guy with red hair, he nods in response.
"he's not much of a talker are ya dun?" Joe asked patting him on the back. Dun just shook his head.
the alarm indicating the end of lunch rang, and with that we all stood up taking our plastic trays to the dish area, and going back to our designated cell blocks.
while I'm walking, with my hands in the pocket of my sweatshirt, I look around at the crowd of orange and gray, still thinking about the guy from yesterday.
I don't know what it was, but I just couldn't get my mind off him.
I arrived in Cell Block B. where I belong.
I find my bunk and enter it, laying in my metal tray with my blanket over me and close my eyes.
I hear Spencer get in to the one above me. I ignore him.
"so, you gonna tell me what's on your mind?" he asks from above me.
"nothing really." I say. I'm not one to spill my emotions to everyone. most of the time I just try to look emotionless so nobody asks me about anything. it's a good system really.
"Ross, I've known you long enough to know something is up. I know you keep all your emotions bottled up, but you're not completely heartless." we're both quiet. I don't know how to respond.
"the guy that visited me yesterday.." I begin.
I can't see him but I bet Spencer is confused, "I thought you said it was just a misunderstanding?"
I shake my head, but then realize he can't see me, "no I just lied because u didn't want to have to explain." I sigh. "he was my lawyer."
"oh.." Spencer responds.
"yeah.. he said he's gonna visit every week and.. and try and get me out."
I can tell Spencer is shocked by his silence, "what do you mean.. out?"
"God dammit Spencer, what does every inmate mean when they say 'out' ?" I ask raising my voice.
he gulps, "so, are you gonna do it?"
I sigh calming myself down, "I don't know where I'd stay." I shrug.
"I'm sure you'll find something Ross. you should get out of here as soon as you can." he laughs but it's true. it's hell here.
"was the guy cute?" Spencer asked.
I give a grin, "very."
I hear Spencer do a little chuckle, "don't be too mean to him. you could use friends outside."
"who said I'm gonna be his friend? he'll probably get me out and then never talk to me again." I sigh.
"you know when the court date is?"
"about a month." I respond to Spencer's question.
Spencer sighs and then I see his legs dangling on my side, then he jumps to the ground and leaves me.
"don't worry Ross, I'm sure things will work out how you want. you're not a bad kid. karma's got something good coming your way." Spencer explains as he walks out.
and all I'm left to do is believe in Karma.
