Stupid

I woke up in an unfamiliar place. I groaned and sat up from a very uncomfortable cot swiveling my head around to look at my surroundings.

Then, I had an epiphany.

I'm in a jail cell.

I see the guard at his desk and the very bland walls that surround us all.

I slowly stand up and walk to the front of the cell, gripping two bars and putting my face between them, hoping the guard will notice me.

He does. He looks my direction and stands up, "ah good Mr. Ross, you're up."

I have him a puzzled look, "h-how did you know my name?" I was confused because i had no form of ID on my person when i crashed.

Did I crash? I don't know, it was all a blur.

"we took your fingerprint last night when we brought you here.

I looked at his name tag, "okay.. thanks officer.. Hurley."

He nodded "We called somebody, the owner of your current residential area?He started typing something on his computer.

"Brandon? is that it?" I felt my heart drop, "B-Brendon, actually." I correct him.

"He said he'd be here soon. Already posted your bail and everything." I gulped. I wasn't ready to face Brendon.

I slowly backed away and sat down on the cot. "What time is it?" I asked looking his direction.

"3:47 AM."

I looked down to my feet. I left at about 11. Why was I out for so long?

"And I'm the only one in here?"

"Yep. You've been here since about midnight. I think you're the only person getting arrested this late on a Thursday night." he laughed typing away on his computer. I don't respond to him.

I lay back on the cot and stare at the ceiling.

I hear the door open and shoot up, expecting to see Brendon.

Instead, I see another officer walk in. Officer Hurley stands up, shakes his hand and they mumble something together. I assume it's just a shift change.

"Bye Mr. Ross, I hope you have a good night."

Once again, I don't respond to him. I just stare at the new guy.

He has longer hair, and a goatee. He seems about the same age as officer Hurley, but he seems smaller. Like he wouldn't hurt a soul.

He doesn't talk to me, just do what he does on the computer.

I impatiently wait for Brendon. Why is it taking so long for him to come? I've been here for 4 hours. For god's sakes i knew he didn't care about me.

The officer picks up his desk phone and dials a number. I sit and ponder what or who he could be calling.

"Hi, Mr. Urie? This is Officer Miranda with the Summerlin polic-" he cuts off, "yes yes he's fi- yes you can come get him. Thank you."

I feel a lump in my throat and swallow it. It burns.

"That was Mr. Urie, he posted your bail. He should be on his way." He looked back to his computer.

"Thank you Officer..."

"Miranda." He looked to me. His long hair was in a ponytail. He looked tired.

"A-are you okay? you look bad." I say quietly trying to start a conversation.

He sighed "I haven't slept in a week. That's about it." he opened up.

"Why is that?"

"I've been writing."

"Oh? You write?"

He nods and hums an affirmative tone.

"Then why are you a police officer?"

"ah, i thought i wasn't good enough at writing. So, here I am. It was my second choice."

"why are you in here buddy? I didn't get a chance to look at your record."

"DWI. I.. I had a fight with my b-" I swallowed "Boyfriend."

"Ah.." he nods "Is he the man coming to get you?" He turns my direction.

I nod reluctantly.

"He must really care about you. Have a fight with you, then pays your fine and coming to get you at 4 in the morning? He's a keeper."

I process his words in my head. Oh my god. He does care.

I hear the door open again, and this time, it is Brendon.

He looks at me with red, hurt eyes.

Officer Miranda doesn't say anything, just stands up and unlocks my cell and opens the door.

I slowly walk out, not breaking my attention away from Brendon. I expect him to yell at me about my bad choices and how I deserved this.

But no. He comes and hugs me. Tightly like he doesn't want to let go.

He placed his head on my chest and says "Don't ever do anything stupid like that again." And it's a this point i know he's
being serious.

I nod and hug him back. "I promise." I whisper a single tear falling down my cheek.

I look up at officer Miranda who is smiling at us.

I know I'll never see that man again in my life, but i want to thank him for making me realize something i almost let ruin me.

"Thank you" I mouth to him and he just nods.

"Can we go?" I ask Brendon and he nods as a response.

we walked out of the building and I look for his car.. but then I remember..

"I-I borrowed a friend of mines old car.." he found the car and got in the drivers seat.

"What happened?"

"Something happened to him, I don't know. But his wife won't tell me. I haven't seen him for awhile."

"what was his name?"

"Tyler."
