Lucy came with us stop after stop, hotel after hotel. Every night Angus and her would isolate themselves in a room with a bed making us all sick. And Lucy thought I was a slut? No offense to Angus or anything but gross. At least she wasn't being polyamorous, not that I knew of. Malcolm especially didn't like her. But he'd always get scolded by Angus whenever he said anything.
"He seems happy with her Mal," I said to him one day.
"No he's not. He's in denial of his feelings toward you and using Lucy to cover up."
"Why would he be in such a denial about me?"
"I don't know, but you must be pretty damn special if he's holding out for so long."
It was July 3rd. The heat was building up in our hotel room so we went to the outdoor pool. Margaret and I never went shopping for swimwear so I had to go in shorts and a tee shirt. Bon had found himself a female audience to entertain while Phil watched in amusement. Mark hung out in the hot tub with a drink which is very dangerous actually so I kept my eye on him. Malcolm left to get a snack from the lobby and Angus and Lucy were having a ball of a time in the water. Splashing, swimming races, anything fun. I sat on the edge watching everyone, mostly 'cause I can't swim. And sinking like a rock is not on my 'to do' list.
A reporter for Countdown came to our hotel and the guys had to leave to get ready for the interview.
"Are you sure you won't go Lucy?" Angus asked his 'girlfriend'.
"Wish I could but Hannah doesn't look too well, I think I should probably stay with her and take care of her." She gave him a false smile. He returned one, genuine.
"See you around then love." He kissed her cheek then left with the rest of the band. Lucy turned to face me with a wicked glare. I was feeling fine and she knew it too. She just wanted us alone so she could- kill me without witnesses or something. She stepped closer to me backing me up against the edge of the pool.
"Well well well. What have we here?" she asked. I didn't answer making her glare turn to a frown. "What's the matter? Can't the little girl answer a question on her own?"
"I'm not that little," I spat at her. She scoffed.
"You sure as hell act like one. Someone does one little thing wrong, you have to tell on someone."
"I haven't done that once," I said. "It's not good to blame your problems on other people you know."
"Guess what? I'm not good. Can you swim, little bitch?" she threatened. I wrinkled my nose as her horrible breath smothered me. Without answering she pushed me backwards into the water. My pool at home is not this deep, and the water dragged me under, slowly killing me.
Someone must have heard the splash or saw me go down 'cause they screamed pretty loud. Luckily I was near the edge, so I grabbed the slippery concrete as quick as the water allowed me. A hand grabbed mine and pulled me out. I sat on my knees coughing up water and who knows what else. I raised my head up to thank my savior but stopped when I saw it was Lucy who helped.
The empty pool yard was filled within seconds but the guys weren't showing up. Finally Bon came to check the commotion, frowning when he saw Lucy and I.
"What the hell happened?" he asked coming over.
"Hannah fainted, she fell in the pool but I got her out," Lucy lied pretending to be concerned.
"You sure you didn't push her in too?" Bon asked standing next to me.
"I would never! I told you all she was lookin' sick and now see what's happened!" The rest of the band came out to check on us.
"What's up?" Mark asked.
"Hannah fell in the pool," Bon explained glaring at Lucy.
"Fell?" Malcolm asked crossing his arms. "Is that your story?" Lucy frowned at them all.
"I swear she fell in! She fainted! Probably from this heat, Angus you believe me." She wrapped her arms around his waist. "Tell them. I'd never push her!"
Angus returned her embrace and looked at me. Malcolm watched him out of the corner of his eye. Lucy played with Angus' hair and I rolled my eyes. "Lucy didn't push her," he finally said. He pulled away from her and walked to me kneeling down. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly.
I nodded and looked down. Angus helped me up and led me to the hotel while everyone followed. Lucy glared at me the whole way. The look on her face as I walked with Angus made my heart go dancing!
"You can borrow some of my clothes for now," Angus said as we reached our hotel room. "I uh, hope you don't mind smelling like a boy," he smiled. I smiled back as he gave me a tee shirt and whatever his pajama pants were.
"Thank you Angus," I said and headed to the bathroom to change.
Angus watched Hannah as she made her way to the bathroom. A certain look entertained his eyes, one of sorrow, one of guilt. He glanced at Malcolm for assurance but he was off getting a drink. Angus looked down the hall one last time before Lucy pulled him away to another bedroom.
I returned to the group to find Angus and Lucy gone. Great, not again. I sat on the couch just wishing this whole trip were over. Phil sat next to me and put a hand on my shoulder. "You alright?" he asked. I shrugged.
"Listen. Don't tell Angus I said this," Bon said. "'cause he'll be kickin' my arse out, but I don't think Lucy got her story right."
"To be honest I don't think Angus believed her," Malcolm said coming back with a drink.
"But he said-" began Phil. Malcolm cut him off.
"I know what he said, but he didn't mean it. He doesn't like her at all. He's in denial."
"That his girlfriend's a bitch?" Mark asked. Malcolm tilted his head at Mark giving him an exhausted look. "Hey we were all thinking it."
"Tell us the truth Hannah," Bon told me. "Did she or did she not push you in?"
