In a perfect world, your parents are to outlive you and you live a happy and long life. That however would be in a perfect world, my world goes a little less planed then I thought it would. You find love when you're ready not when someone else tells you too. You get married and have babies after high school in that order. For me however things are not working out that way.
My mother is standing in the living room and I'm not sure what she's doing but I know they are packing for a trip that I decided not to go on with them. My mother brother and father load into the car and they are gone for a two-week trip. I'm home to myself and that's the way I like it, but I always have a friend here since it's lonely in the house.
My parents check in with me every day at the end of the day so that I know they made it to their hotel and as the week goes on they continue this routine. We're also still in school but it's nearing the end of my junior year and I can't be happier. I'm not with anyone and my friends are all with someone, I'm always the third wheel but I don't mind. It's the last day of their vacation and my father calls to let me know they are leaving and heading home. This trip should take them eight hours but it's been about twelve. I don't call as I know they probably had to stop somewhere.
As the night wares on I can't sleep knowing they haven't made it home yet. I go to school the next day wondering what's going on. There are no words from me as I wait for some news, but the news I got wasn't what I wanted.
Class is going on and the teacher is talking about what we should spend our summers doing. We should be getting ready for our senior year but there comes an announcement and we all look around.
"Elenor Long to the Counselors office."
I stare off into space hoping its some news from my parents. I gather all my things and head to her office where two police officers are standing. I'll never forget the moment he made me sit down to tell me that not only was there an accident but none of my family made it out alive. He ripped my heart out and I was alone in this world.
I stayed with a friend for a few days but I didn't go to school. As soon as the burials were over my grandparents flew in from Russia to help me through the legal parts. It wasn't until that day that I learned just how prepared they were to die before I was ready.
"I have here you're parent's will. I know that this is going to be hard for you to understand but since you have no state side relatives, we have to see what they wanted to happen and go from there."
"Sure, fine." I say staring at the table.
"Your parents were well prepared for this. It seems they've arranged for you to be married."
"Wait, What? Married? To Who?"
"A gentleman by the name of Harold Styles."
"This can't get any worse, what else did they say?"
"They gave you a period to get married in. They want you to marry before both your senior years start. They also have a house for you away from everyone you know. There is information about the new school you will both attend."
I'm looking at the paper in disbelief unsure that this is truly what they want for me."
Sitting there across from the lawyer I cry, I know nothing about this man other than he's about to be 18 and his name is Harold. I'm lost in thought about this when my grandmother speaks.
"I am not sure that I want her to marry this man." She says as her thick Russian accent comes out.
"It seems we have no choice in the matter."
