Tanner
Every Day and Night Walker was always born with a twin; it had always been that way since the dawn of the Walker time. Many considered it as a good thing because that meant that the vampire always had someone in their life that they could trust and depend on. It could be two sisters, or two brothers, or a brother and a sister. How was it, that out of every single possible Day Walker that there was on the planet that he got stuck with Maria? They spent most of their time whining and fighting with each other than doing anything else! Tanner wasn’t a complicated person, well he thought he wasn’t. If you did something nice for him he would do something nice for you, if you got him angry he would make you angrier, if you ignored him and pretended that he didn’t matter, well you were going to wish that you hadn’t. Those rules also applied with his parents, even though they didn’t really seem to notice it. Still, what was so complicated in all of that? Tanner wasn’t a bad person, he knew that for a fact no matter how much his sister said otherwise. Of course like every teenager, he did have some issues, but not big ones. The biggest problem lived in the same house as him and wore designer flip-flops and plastic nails; but he was slowly learning to deal with The Problem.
Growing up, twins were most of the time forced to be together all the timefor every single possible reason; it was a way to build communication between them so that they could get along perfectly as life went on. At school, twins always had the same classes, and if teachers needed to choose partner for projects twins always had to work together, always together, always.
When he and his sister were younger they got along perfectly, they did everything together without any argument or problems and they always had fun, like best friend, maybe even more. Around the age of twelve, when Maria had hit puberty, she started acting differently; she had daily mood swings and sudden breakdowns. Very often she would ignore Tanner completely and go out with her new friends, vampires which Tanner didn’t really approve of. Not that his opinion seemed to matter to his sister anymore. Maria had started to care more about her looks and reputation than she did about him. The new Maria did not please Tanner one bit, so slowly they started growing apart and for some reason turning against each other. Nowadays, sometimes, they were like complete strangers to one another, maybe even like ghosts that haunted the same house.
Tanner put the half broken table back on the terrace, and threw Maria’s completely broken green chair in the garbage. Even if it hadn’t broke he would have thrown out anyway, he despised that chair and the Walker that sat in it. Tanner then picked up his sister’s sunglasses, towel, iPod, and tan lotion, before finally going into the house. He put her stuff on the kitchen counter, hoping that the maids would take care of it. He opened the fridge, grabbed a can of pop, and then slowly walked up the stairs. Tanner had no intention of going to his room, not that his parents would notice. Helen and William were probably already planning their next trip, and Tanner was certain that this time they wouldn’t come back for a very long time. But it wasn’t any of his business. He had stopped caring about his parents the day that they had stopped caring about him, which was around the age of five, when he and his twin had started going to school. For seven years they had had a different nanny every two months, until they turned twelve and could take care of themselves. It was rather sad that their parents took so little interest in them. The only time that William and Helen seemed to care about their children’s’ existence was when they had company events and they needed Tanner and Maria to attend with them as a family. He and his twin even made the effort to try and get along in public so that their parents would be proud of them. To their parents’ colleagues, Maria and Tanner were the young, good looking, smart, charming and almost perfect Preston children. Thinking back on it now, Tanner did not recall once his mother or father ever complimenting him, or telling him or his twin that they were proud of them. But Tanner was sixteen now, and he knew better than to seek for his parents’ approval and attention when he just knew that it would never happen. Instead, Tanner decided to go search for Hector the groundskeeper.
