       “My love?” he whispered.

       “Yes?”

       “Don’t ever leave me.”

Brooke felt like an arrow had hit her in the chest. He had pleaded.

She sat up and held his chin with her hand.

“I won’t. I promise”, she said and kissed him with a single tear escaping from the corner of her eye.

Brooke had watched Louis get dressed and then leave. She didn’t want him to, but she needed to talk to her father, so he had had to.

She got dressed and walked down to her father’s office. She saw on the clock that they had already eaten breakfast, so she guessed that her father had asked people not to call her down for it.

She knocked two times on the door and opened it. There he sat behind the desk, smoking on his pipe as usual. He looked up and his eyes dropped quickly down to the papers again.

      “Good morning”, he muttered.

“Good morning”, she said and sat down infront of him. “I think we need to talk.”

“Indeed”, he said and laid his pipe on the desk and leaned back in the chair with his arms crossed over his chest. “You told me that you didn’t kill those people, but then who did, Brooke?”

      “I can’t tell you.”

“Yes, you can. And you will.”

Brooke shook her head and let her gaze fall down on her lap.

“Why are you protecting that thing?” he yelled at her.

“That thing? I happened to be that thing too you know!”

He was about to answer but she stood up and held her hand up as a sign for him not to.

“You can’t fight him. Even though the whole town helped you. He is incredibly strong and fast. He would kill you in an instant.”

     “Who?”

“You just don’t get it, do you?”

He stood up too and leaned over the desk.

“What am I supposed to get, Brooke? You aren’t telling me anything!”

     “I can’t!”

Brooke turned around and walked out of the office with her father calling after her. She ran up to her room again and slammed the door shut. She walked out on the balcony and closed her eyes, breathed in the fresh air of trees and morning.

     “Miss Harmon?”

Brooke twirled around and saw Lynn and Nelly standing in the door. Brooke sighed and walked inside again.

     “Yes?”

“We’ve prepared your dress for you.”

     “For what?”

     “For tomorrow tonight.”

     “What is happening tomorrow tonight?”

“The dance in the town hall.”

The dance? She had totally forgotten about the dance! The town had this dance once a year where they had a fancy dinner and then danced to celebrate the day when the town was founded. But only important people were invited.
