“Go to sleep, love. I’ll stay with you and protect you from nightmares”, he whispered in her ear and she relaxed and drifted away.

It was raining. The raindrops hit the roof hard and made Brooke turn in her bed. The sound was too loud and she sat up. It was still dark outside but she could tell that the morning was close because of the scent she could feel. She couldn’t really describe how it smelt but morning smelt different than the ofter times of the day. So new and fresh.

She noticed that she was alone. He had left while she had been sleeping. She had been alone so much these few days and she started to feel really lonely. But at the same time, it felt nice. She had no one to complain about her mood or anything. But why had he left? Did something happen? Did her father come in and saw them together? Had he killed Louis...? She shooke her head. She shouldn’t worry about Louis being killed in his sleep by her father. It should be the other way around. She knew Louis could take care of himself.

She climbed out of bed with her blanket wrapped tightly around her body and walked up to her closet and opened it. She had never really dressed herself properly so that would be a challenge. She took out a lightblue thin dress and laid it on the bed. Then she took out an underdress but didn’t bother to bring a corset. They were so uncomfortable. She put on her dresses and combed her hair and then braided it.

The rain was still pouring down outside and now, the sound didn’t disturb her. It actually made her feel calm. She sat down by her window and leaned her forhead against the cool surface. She felt this  nagging feeling in her chest and bit her lip. She had no idea if it was because of the night that she and Louis shared or because he had left her without a word. But the more she thought about the night, the more she regretted it. She hadn’t really been herself and he had seduced her with his charm and looks. And she had fallen for him like a rock from a qliff. And fast too. She knew that what had happened was wrong. But it hadn’t felt wrong just then.

She really should think more before action. But she had though, and she had thought that she would be regretting it if she didn’t let herself to him, and now she half-regretted that she had.

She heard a whistling from outside and looked up at her balcony railing. There sat a yellow little bird with a black pot on its head and looked at her. A Wilson’s Warbler. Its feathers were wet and the raindrops that fell on it didn’t seem to bother it at all. The little bird just jumped around on the railing and bobbed its head and whistled. She stood up and opened the door and went out on the balcony. The bird flew to the other side of the balcony and contiuned to sing.

“Come here”, she cooed at it and held out her finger. “Come here. I’m not gonna hurt you.”

It didn’t move and she stepped closer to it. But then it flew away and disappeared. She hit her thigh and sighed.

      “Everyone is leaving me today.”

      “I didn’t.”

She turned around and her gaze fell on Louis who sat on the railing behind her. His clothes was soaking wet.

“Louis...” she whispered but didn’t move an inch.

“I’m sorry if you woke up all alone, but I was hungry.”

She stood silent for a while.

“You didn’t kill anyone, right?” she asked, her voice full of caution.

      “No. She’s alright.”

“But, won’t she...” she started but he cut her of.

“I made her forget, she won’t remember a thing.”

      “How did you do that?”

“I can show you, just come with me. I can tell that you’re hungry too, I bet you haven’t fed properly.”

She felt her stomach turn in hunger and she looked up at him.

“So I was right then. Come here”, he said and held out his hand for her to grab it.

“But what about the rain? I don’t want to get wet.”

He raised an eyebrow. “A little late for that, don’t you think?”

She could feel her soaking wet clothes cling around her body and sighed. Then she took his hand and he pulled her close to him and picked her up in bridal style.

      “Hold on.”

Then he jumped away from the balcony and far away. It all went so fast and the wind whistled in her ears. Then her feets hit the ground again and she opened her eyes. They were at the edge of the woods near her house. That had been a long jump.

He cupped her face in his hands and looked her dead in the eye.

“This is what we are going to do, we are gonna pick an human, you’re gonna feed, then I’m going to teach you how to make the person forget.” She shooke her head. “No, no Brooke, you need to learn this. You are not going to survive otherwise. You have to feed.”

“But what if I’ll kill...” He put a finger over her lips.

      “You won’t.”

She hesitated.

      “Just trust me, Brooke.”

She just nodded and followed him. She had once fed from an human. But that human had been dead. So that was not really the same thing. But she had lost her control in front her father anyway. Who knew how she was going to react with a living human being?
