Ethan x Reader

I take a deep breath in the mirror, taking in my appearance. I'm wearing a nice, flowy F/C blouse, black skinny jeans, and a pair of F/C heels to match. He never liked it when I wore high heels. I turn away from the mirror and grab my jacket, keys, phone, and my earbuds. I walk down the stairs and out the door, locking it along the way. Once outside I put in my earbuds and plug them into my phone, pressing shuffle on my playlist. My favorite song comes on and I give a sad smile as I begin my walk to the cafe. He always said he didn't get this song.

Once I arrive at the cafe I walk in expecting Ethan to be late, but to my surprise he's early and he's standing at the front, waiting for me. I walk up to him and he smiles. "Hey, you made it! I already got us a table but I didn't want you to have to walk around on your own trying to find it, so I, uh, waited for you," he explains, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. I give him a small smile. "Thank you," I say softly.

He grins and holds his arm out to me. I hesitantly take it, blushing as he begins to lead the way. He stops in front of a table and pulls a chair out and motions for me to sit down. I blink in surprise. Wow, he's so... nice. I sit and he pushes me forward a bit, so that I could be closer to the table. Then he moves around so that he's sitting across from me. He then starts an easy conversation about things I like.

"No way! 14?!" he exclaims. I nod, smiling. "Wow. Ya know, I've never met one girl who had as many James Taylor records as me. And I only have 12," he says, leaning forward a little. I shrug sheepishly. "I've been a big fan ever since I was little. My mum used to listen to him all the time, so naturally, I learned all the words," I explain. "Which album is your favorite?" he asks. "Gorilla," I answer, no hesitation. He grins. "That's my favorite, too!"

We continue to tell stories and he tells me all about his YouTube channel. He talks about how his friends have channels, too and they form a group called The Sidemen. I haven't been saying too much, probably coming off shy, but it's alright because he seems to understand and fills the silence with stories about the videos they've done and plan on doing.

I watch in awe as he throws his head back laughing like a little kid, recalling the helium video they did, talking about how funny their voices sounded, and all the eggs he got smashed on his head. I really love his laugh. It's very contagious, and I find myself laughing along with him. I pipe up and tell him a few jokes, and he laughs even more. I giggle and tilt my head to the side a bit in wonder. I think it's strange that he thinks I'm funny, 'cause he never did.

Soon we've both finished our meal and I get up to go pay, but he beats me to it, rushing in front of me. He continues to surprise me. I've never met anyone like him. I stand there, kind of just staring at him in awe. Once he's done paying, he turns to me and notices me staring at him. "What? Chivalry isn't dead," he says, giving a teasing little smile. I smile and slightly shake my head. "You're something else, you know that?" He cocks his head like a confused puppy. "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

"Definitely a good thing," I say. He grins and yet again offers his arm, and this time I happily take it. He only lets go to open the door for me, making me giggle as he leans down a bit and uses his other arm to point in the direction of the door. "After you m'lady," he says in a posh voice. I curtsey. "Thank you, kind sir," I retaliate. We both laugh and we lock arms again, walking down the street towards my house.

As we're talking, in my head I couldn't help but compare Ethan to him. They're so different, but I'm glad. Ethan is nothing like him. He was mean, and lazy, and loved to criticize me and everything I did. Ethan is nice, and kind, and just loves to have a good time, and I'm really glad I met him and decided that after 8 months, I can give dating another go. I look at Ethan and almost bring him up, but then he starts to talk about all the movies that his family watches every single Christmas, and I decide I'd much rather talk about that.

And for the first time, what's past is past.
