As I sat in maths, I was zoning in and out of focus, Ms Murphy’s voice literally almost putting me to sleep, also from the fact I didn’t sleep at all last night from what had happened. “- And that’s all you need to know about the quiz next week.” She finally finished my head snapping up, coming back into the world. There was a tap on my shoulder, James’ worried brown eyes wide. “Um, are you okay?” I nodded, nervously looking down at my sheet in shock. Written all over it was one word, one simple but haunting word, covering each and every inch of the page.
Jai.
My breath hitched in my throat, my eyes beginning to water. “Luke, did you go and see him?” I stayed quiet, which hopefully gave him the answer he needed. “ What the hell why? What happened?” I sighed, beginning to tell him everything that happened, everything apart from what Jai had told me, and that I was going back tomorrow. He whistled, looking unsure as to what to say. Well that’s a first. “Well, maybe you should-“He was cut off by the end of school bell, me mentally sighing.
Only 1 day left.

As soon as I stepped through the door, mum was there, a scowl on her face. “Luke Anthony Mark Brooks, what did you do?” I gulped, seeing Beau pop his head around the corner, a defeated look on her face. “She was threatening to take away my car, I couldn’t let that happen!” The looked on mums face made me want the ground to swallow me, and never spit me out. But that would only be from luck, I’m not lucky.
“I cannot believe you broke the only rule I have in this house, what is that rule again Luke?” I groaned. “To never under any circumstances go see Jai.” She uncrossed her arms, her eyes still glued to me. “You do not realize what trouble you’re in, do you know what could have happened to you?!” I just rolled my eyes and pushed past her, mum gasping in shock. “Don’t you dare turn your back on me-““JUST SHUT UP MUM! NOTHING HAPPENED AND IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN, FOR FUCK SAKES WAS IT SO BAD JUST TO GO SEE MY BROTHER?!” I shouted, walking up the hall and slamming my door shut, hopefully in her face if she was following me.
I don’t see what the big deal was. Yes Jai is mentally unstable and has been living in a place for crazy people a third of his life, but he didn’t hurt me, he just wanted to see me. This is just making me want to see him more, and I am going to see him, maybe not do what he wants, but I will see him. “AND DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT COMING OUT OF YOUR ROOM UNTIL YOU THINK THIS ALL OVER!” Mum shouted behind the door, causing me to roll my eyes. She still hasn’t learned to never underestimate a teenager on a mission.
I quickly ran to my window, sliding it open and ducking through it, trying to make as least noise as possible. I landed swiftly on my feet, closed my window again and started running to the institute.

Kaitlyn lead me to his room again, a puzzled look on her face. “Well, we’ll be out here if you need us.” She whispered, opening the door again, me walking through, Jai’s pin point reflexes kicking in, him already on his feet in front of me. “Who the fuck are you?” He spat, venom in his voice. I threw my hands up, placing my hand on his raised shoulder. “It’s me, Luke, just-“”A day early.” He muttered, pushing me off him. “Why?” I just told him what happened, his eyes not leaving my own.
He swore under his breath as I finished. “I told you she’s a bitch Luke, you’d be better in here with me.” I tensed, unsure of what he meant by that. “Anyway, I might as well tell you why I wanted you here again.” He said, sitting down on his bed, motioning me to copy his actions. I hesitantly did, really not sure how I should act around a psycho path. Well, he wasn’t really like that, on the cover he seemed normal, but inside it was probably a whole different story.
“I’ve been here for what, 6 years, and I left with unfinished business,” He began, now standing. “And I need you to help me with that business. “ I just nodded, not really knowing where this was going. “Well, I’ll do what you need to do I guess.” He just laughed at me, the scar near his eye shining in the setting sun beaming from the small window beside him, making him seem even more intimidating than he really was. “No Luke, you don’t get it. I’m going to do that, by being you and you me.” “What?” He was beginning to scare me, his words getting more twisted as he spoke. “I mean, you’re gonna stay here, pretending to be me, while I go out in the world, pretending to be you.”
I stood up immediately, backing away from him towards the door. “Come on Luke, it’ll be like playing mirrors.” I raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?” Jai stepped closer to me, his dilated pupils narrowing even more. “It’s a game we made up.” “We?” I asked, feeling the nerves settling in my chest. Jai chuckled, grabbing my head and whispering in my ear, “Yes we, as in me and the voices.” That’s all I heard, before there was a piercing pain in my head, everything going black.
