Chapter 3
Maddie's POV

" Hey Maddie, meet me after school behind the gym to hang today!

-Josh "
Josh Hyland just asked me to meet him after school.
Why would Josh Hyland ask me to meet him after school. We see each other in the hallway once and now he was asking me to hang out? Something seemed wrong, but I've never really hung out in a while. I looked up to see Josh leaning towards the back of his chair watching me read.
I made up my mind and nodded, while Josh flashed a signature smile my way.

I leaned against the wall lightly and tossed my hood on my jacket up to keep the November wind from tossing my hair around. I tapped my foot impatiently while thoughts whirled around in my head.
He ditched me, I knew it. How could I possibly think it would be that easy? Of course it wouldn't be, it's not a fairy tale and I wasn't getting my Prince Charming. Josh was just another Junior High Jerk.

I hastily stood off the wall and began marching off across the soccer field, when a familiar voice stopped me. "Hey where are you going Maddie?" Josh ran around the corner. I turned around in bewilderment, I guess I was wrong. I began to run back across the field, but a pain in my side from previous beatings me threw me into the snow suddenly.
"Maddie?" Josh ran towards me in fear. "I told you I was clumsy," I positioned a pained smile on my face and let Josh help me to my feet.

"Why'd you ask me here?" I trailed along next to him as we trudged up the hill leading towards the sidewalk. "I haven't seen you in a while since we've moved." Josh shrugged. Josh used to live a few doors down and we rode together the bus but rarely spoke.
"Okay..." I trailed off. Josh and I found a spot next to a tree and sat down. "Tell me about yourself," he smiled. "I'm Maddie," I rolled my eyes and let a giggle escape my mouth. "Favorite color?" He quizzed, "Blue," I smiled "I like red," he replied.
Josh and I sat and talked a while, it was actually really nice to have company, but it still felt foreign to me. "Josh what's it like to have siblings?" I asked sitting on my side, in habit my legs swished into a swastika position and I smiled and awaited his response. "It's nice, but Brooke, my older sister is the laziest person known to man. Paige, well she's sweet, but nosy. Wait, don't you have a sister?" Josh asked as I froze.

My sister had died a few years ago, but that was a family secret and I swore never to speak of it. "No," I lied blankly, but inside my mind was rushing. My palms were sweating heavily, but I sighed and tried to clear my mind of the awful thoughts.

Everything was going swell until and uncomfortable question came up. "What do your parents do for a living?" He asked. I paused and shifted uncomfortably as the smile on my face faded. I couldn't tell him the hurt me obviously, and quite honestly I avoided my parents whenever possible and rarely asked them things. I didn't know what to say. I thought metaphorically for a moment and found a solution. They paint awful bruises on my back and sculpt horrible memories, the only way I couldn't lie, was to simply tell him the truth.
"They're artists,"
