Chapter 16
Josh's POV

The bell rang loudly and the sound echoed down the hall. I got up from the desk immediately and ran to my locker. The sooner I was out of school, the better. Maddie said her father leaves for work at 12 and she's home alone for an hour before her mom returns, so I had 2 hours to see of she was ok.

I realized I hadn't considered the fact that Maddie might jut be mad at me. I couldn't roll into action until I knew for sure if she was hurt. To be honest I was hoping she was furious with me so I wouldn't have to see her writhe in pain if it were the latter.

I slung my book bag quickly over my shoulder and slammed the locker shut. "Hey Hyland! Wanna shoot some hoops?" My friend Ryan stopped me in the hallway. "No, I can't I have got to go!" I said quickly and continued down the hall, but Ryan's words stopped me, "You've changed Josh."

I haven't changed one bit! What was he talking about. They were just babbling on all this stupid nonsense to lure me into playing a few basketball games with them, but they weren't going to trick me, I had to go check on Maddie. However, I had two hours and haven't hung with the guys in ages. No! What was I thinking? This obviously was a toss up between the girlfriend or the guys, but I couldn't harm my reputation.

I turned around and grabbed the ball from him, "1 round but then I've got to go, ok?" I ran to the court quickly and tossed the ball around with the guys.

However we lost track of time and 1 game easily turned into 3 and I discovered I had 30 minutes to check on Maddie, before her dad got home.

"I can't be late for dinner, bye guys!" I grabbed my book bag and darted from the court.

I was running along Maddie's street when I finally saw her tall house. A small figure laid softly in the snow, it was Maddie.

"Oh my god!! Maddie!" I raced towards her laying in the snow. Her arm seemed to be missing, but I discovered it was painfully wedged behind her back. "Maddie?" I shook her softly, but she wasn't moving. I worriedly pushed my ear to her chest and heard a slowed heartbeat. She needed help, but not here. I grabbed her from the snow and cradled her in my arms.

Maddie would murder me if I took her to a hospital, so I could only go home.

I rushed inside and quietly crept up to Paige's room so my parents wouldn't see. "Josh get out of my-" Paige froze and helped me lay Maddie onto the bed. "Oh my god! What happened?"

"I found Maddie laying unconscious in the snow of her yard." Maddie's whole body was cold, but not like a dead cold, like a snow cold.

"Get me your heating pad and wrap pronto!" Paige scurried to the bathroom and I found a plug to plug the heating pad in.

We pushed the heating pad lightly beneath Maddie's back and hoped she'd warm up. Then we wrapped her right hand the was wedged between her shoulder blades when I found her. "Josh I think her wrist is sprained," Paige sighed but I sat blankly.

Come on Maddie wake up

Please wake up

Maddie I need you

I need you Maddie!

I mentally began to plead to the sleeping beauty next to me. If Maddie never woke up, I would never forgive myself.

After a good 2 long hours passed, Maddie woke up with a flutter of her eyelashes and a hoarse voice.

"Maddie, it's me Josh, I need you to tell me exactly what happened!" I spat desperately. "Josh why am I here? My Pa will kill me so hard! How could you!" Maddie's tears flowed quickly down her face. I had forgotten we were in the mist of the fight and I guess me saving her life rekindled her flame of hatred towards me.

"Gee, I'm sorry I didn't mean to save your life!" I angrily snapped sarcastically. "You didn't save me you just made matters worse!" She sat up and winced in pain of putting pressure on her sprained wrist.

"You know it seems like I'm the one who always has to say, 'I'm sorry Maddie.' 'Sorry it's my fault' Why can't you take responsibility for once instead of making me always apologize!" I yelled angrily and turned towards Paige's door, intending to leave.

I felt Maddie's hurt expression facing my back. "Maybe it's because I never hear it enough," she sobbed. I felt a pang of guilt in my chest, but burst out the door angrily.
