Chapter Eight

"What do we have?" I ask, surveying the bloody clothes on the little girls arm.

"A bite of some kind." One of the nurses says.

"A bite?" I peel back the cloth and inspect the wound. Sure enough, there's a bite about the size of my fist.

"What could have done this?" I say, inspecting the damage. It looks severe.

"Parents don't know. She just showed up from playing outside with the bite. Before they could ask anything, she collapsed."

"Okay," I say, taking my stethoscope and checking her heartbeat. "we need to get that bleeding under control, then work on repairing it. It's going to need some serious stitches."

"Taylor..." A nurse named Katie says.

"Yeah?" I look up from her file.

"You might want to look at this."

I walk over and look at what she's pointing at. I take a closer look, squinting my eyes. The teeth marks look almost....

"Those look human." I say.

"Human incisors. That's what it looks like." Katie says.

"No human could do this much damage." I say, pointing my hand at it. "The damage is too extensive for human teeth to do. It has to be a dog or something."

The monitor starts beeping.

"Her heart rates going down!" I shout. "I need a AED!"

Doctors and nurses coming rushing in with the defibrillator.

"Clear!" Someone shouts, as they shock her. The girls whole body jerks with the shock.

"Clear!"

The monitor continues to beep.

I move to stand by the girl. "Come on, sweetie." I whisper.

The girl opens her eyes.

But something's wrong. The heart rate is flat on the screen with one, long, continuous beep.

"Something wrong with the machine?" I ask. I look closely at the girl and see her eyes are bloodshot.

"Sweetie," I say. "can you hear me?"

The girl jumps up at the nearest doctor and launches herself. She bites the doctors arm. Nurses and people begin screaming.

"What's going on?!" I yell.

I grab one of the girls arms to calm her. "Honey, nobody's going to hurt you."

She turns towards me. Her eyes are deep red. Blood trickles from her lips. She licks the blood and stares at me. Then she lunges.

I jump back before she can bite me. Security guards rush down the hallway. I back out of the room, my hand out in front of me.

"Nobody's going to hurt you." I say gently. "I promise. Just calm down. We're going to help you."

I glance down at the doctor on the floor, blood coming from his hand. I look down and see a finger on the ground.

The security guards surround the room, Tasers out.

"You going to Tase a little girl?" I ask.

"Ma'am we need you to move back." One of them says.
