The three of us race up the hill. The screaming continues. The closer I get, I realize it's Carl screaming. Maggie is beside him, holding him up.

"What happened?" Rick yells, running ahead. "What happened? Did he get bit?"

"No, no." Maggie says, frantic. "I don't know what happened. But his leg."

I look down and see his foot at and awkward angle. Not good.

"Lay him down." I say.

"What?!" Rick asks.

"Lay him down on the ground. His foot is broken and we need to get his shoe off now."

Maggie and Rick help lay him down on the ground.

"Maggie hold him up." I look up at Daryl, who is staring at the foot in shock. "Do you have something with wheels that we can put him on?"

He just keeps staring.

"Daryl!" I yell.

"Yeah- yeah there's a operation table. What we put Hershel on."

"Go get it."

"What?"

"Go get it. Now!" I yell at him.

He runs off and I look back at Carl's foot. "Rick, I need you to hold his foot steady while I pull the boot off. Carl this is going to hurt a lot, but the more you move, the more it's going to hurt, okay?"

He nods and grits his teeth. I start pulling and see his face go slack.

"I need you to stay awake. Maggie talk to him. Keep him with us."

I start pulling the boot again. Carl starts screaming and thrashing.

"Hold his foot still!" I finish pulling it off and examine the foot. It's swollen and still bent.

Right on time, Daryl comes back with the table, Beth and Hershel in tow.

"I need to set his foot. I'm going to need all of your help." I say, looking up at all of them. "Daryl, Rick, help get him on the table. Be as gentle as possible." They pick him up, his yells getting louder.

"Maggie, hold his foot still as we move. Daryl push it as slowly as possible. But hurry at the same time."

"Damn girl, which do you want me to do?"

"Both." I say. They begin to push as I hold Carl's hand, trying to calm him.

"Beth," I say. "Run up to my room. In my bag is some pain medicine and sleeping pills. Grab both. Go ahead of us. Hurry!"

I look over at Carol. "Open the doors."

They wheel him inside to the room with the tables. "Glenn, go grab three pillows. Carol, I need you to get some water and we need towels. Beth, where is that medicine?!"

"Right here!" She says, coming up behind me, breathless.

"Good. Carol I need that water now!" I look to Rick, who is still holding Carl's hand. "I'm going to give him a sleeping pill. It won't knock him out, but it will make him too drowsy to move. I'm going to have to set it though. Without x-ray or anything, I can't be sure how bad it is or if I'm setting it right."

"What-what can happen?"

"The worst? It doesn't go right, he'll have a limp. He might not be able to run."

"But, but you'll try, right?"

"I'll try my hardest." Then I instantly go back to nurse mode. It felt so good to be doing this again. Even though Carl was in a lot of pain.
