Chapter 15:

I dialed Yuuto's number a burst of courage that was pulsing through my veins. I held the phone up to my ear, but as I heard the sound of the phone ringing, the courage flew away. I suddenly wanted to throw the phone, along with Yuuto's number, out the window. I was nervously picking at the beds of my fingers nails when I heard a voice answer the phone. Swallowing back the wad of thick saliva that had pooled in my throat, I answered back.

“Hello, is Yuuto there?” I was very proud of how certain my voice sounded on the phone, despite the sweat that was trickling down my back.

“Yes, this is him. Who's calling?”

I was foolishly betrayed by how Yuuto couldn't recognize my voice over the phone, I had memorized the deep crooning tenor that was his the moment I got into that car and drove away.

“Um, it's me R-Rika.” I bit my tongue after I said those words. I had become so nervous that I had almost called myself Rina. Like a crazed fool.

“Oh! Hey, Rika, I was wondering if you had lost your arm or something.”

“What?”

There was suddenly an awkward silence between us before I heard him cough quietly.

“Ah...because I wrote my number on your arm? I'll admit that was a pretty terrible joke...” Yuuto finished with a chuckle.

Yuuto's obvious nervousness brought a small smile to my face. It wasn't much, but an attractive guy getting tongue tied over me?

Insane. It was about as insane as me getting a guy's number right out of the clear blue sky.

I let out a little laugh as well.

“I was just calling to ask if you wanted to hang out sometime?”

I tried not to groan aloud as my voice audibly grew higher as the question went on.

“Sure! Where do you want to meet?”

I froze for a moment as a million thoughts and options ran through my head. I was so mushed and muddled that I eventually mumbled out “I don't know...”

“Ah...”

There was an another awkward silence before Yuuto spoke “How about I suggest some place? There's this restaurant near my school that serves really nice pastries. You seem like a girl who likes sweets, do you want to meet there?”

My stomach settled as the burden of making such a sudden decision was lifted off my shoulders.

“Yes, “ I said while a little sigh passed through my teeth.

“What's the address?”

I grabbed the notepad on the coffee table and the pen that was on the floor under it. I nodded and wrote address down quickly, absentmindedly scribbling as Yuuto still spoke.

“So hey...uh, how's your boyfriend?”

Another small smile crept onto my face. Even I could see the transparency of that question. It was nice to know that not everyone was cool, calm and collected all the time.

I laughed quietly into the phone, “He's still not my boyfriend. He's my best friend's boyfriend.”

“Just making sure.”

There was silence between us for the third time, but in this instance it was not stifling or awkward or a sad mixture of both. It was happy.

It was nice.

“Well, I'll see you tomorrow. It was nice hearing your voice again.” I told Yuuto as a warm blush settled onto the back of my neck.

“Your's too. Bye.”
