I heard my alarm go off. Was it seven already? I feel like I just shut my eyes. I reach over, shut off my alarm, and roll over face down in my pillow. I can hear the guys moving around in the living room outside my door. I knew Shawn would be up on time, after all, we were going early to rent him a snowboard.
I flip onto my back and let out a sigh. I know I have to get up, but I can see the freezing snow outside my window and it is not easy to leave the warmth of my bed. I stretch out and then walk out to the living room. I give a tired "good morning" to Shawn and Ali and then head upstairs to grab some breakfast.
After I ate and fully wake up, I look at the clock. It reads 7:40. "Haylee, go get dressed and ready to go. We are leaving in 20 minutes" Dad tells me.
"I'm going, I'm going," I groan and walk down the stairs.
"Come on Haylee, get ready, the shop is going to get crowded if we don't get there early!" Shawn says annoyed at my slow attempts to get ready.
"Okay jeez, who are you, Dad?" I say to him.
"Just move a little faster please, I really don't want to waste any time, I will only have the snowboard for one day."
I scoff at him and then close my door. I pile my layers on and gather up my jacket, helmet, boots, and mittens. I place them on the couch and then head to the bathroom to do my hair. I add a touch of concealer and mascara and then brush my hair. I put 2 french braids in my hair, take one last look at myself, add some chapstick, and then turn off the light.
"Okay, I am ready to go!" I yell up to Dad.
"Alright, go put the stuff in the truck and then we will leave"
"Everyone's stuff? Why do I have to do that?" I whine.
"Because I asked you to. Come on, you only have to put in your gear, and then my ski's and Alistair's snowboard. It should not take you more than 2 minutes."
"Ugh, fine, if I must." I gather up the stuff I threw on the couch, walk out to the garage and put it in the front seat. Ali and Shawn were shoveling the driveway. I put everything in the trunk. "I put everything in the trunk Dad!"
"Okay, I will be right down, let me grab the keys." "Does everyone have their passes?"
"Yep," we all respond in unison.
I got in the car. Shawn and Ali finished shoveling the driveway and then got in the car. We pulled out of the driveway, closed the garage door, and started down the street towards the rental shop.
When we got there, it was just starting to get crowded. Shawn and Dad rushed into the shop. Ali and I stay in the car, I don't really want to just stand around in the shop full of people.
"So, are you enjoying Tahoe so far?" I ask Ali, trying to stay calm and act normal. I am determined not to blush at all during our conversation.
"Yeah, I am having a great time. It is so nice up here, I wish I could live here," Ali says.
"Yeah, you and me both. Life seems so much more chill here."
"It sort of does I guess."
"So... Um how long have you been snowboarding for?"
"Um, let's see. I was about 10 when I tried it for the first time so I guess about 6 years? I don't really know, my family does not come to Tahoe every year. How about you? You said you were new to it right?"
"Oh cool. Yeah, I am definitely new to it. Shawn and I took a lesson together last year and we did it one other time. This is my first year snowboarding and not skiing."
