“What are we supposed to be drawing, Scarlett?” Jessica whispered from my left side - the side not facing the window covered wall. I sighed faintly, the corner of my mouth quirking up in the process. Jess was forever not paying attention in class. It shouldn’t surprise me anymore, but it still does. She never ceases to amaze me.

“Whatever we want to. She just wants to see how well we can all draw.”

“Darn! I’m horrible at drawing. What are you doing?” She leaned over and tried to see what was on my easel, and nearly fell off her chair because of it. Slightly, I shifted my easel and chair her way, just enough so that she could see what I was drawing: nothing. Jessica smirked and nodded. She turned back to her easel and pressed her pen to the paper.

“I don’t know yet,” I whispered, more to myself than to anyone else. Focusing on my blank sheet of paper, an idea started forming in my head. Unconsciously, my left hand moved to press the pencil in the corner of the paper- where my drawing started. I began to recreate the lines and contours that had appeared in my head. I let myself completely forget about my surroundings and just focus on my drawing.

Suddenly, a hand clamped down on my shoulder, pulling me out of my reverie and jump in fright. As I turned around to glare at whoever had come up behind me I noticed that the entire classroom was empty and that the person standing behind me was my teacher. My cheeks turned bright red in embarrassment. “Sorry,” I mumbled, the tone of my voice giving away that I was mortified.

“That’s quite alright Scarlett. It’s time to go, so you’d better pack up.” She walked away after saying that, and I sighed in relief. I packed up all my stuff and left the classroom quickly. Luckily, I walked home, so I didn’t need to worry about missing my bus.

“No, please! Don’t hurt me!” Jessica was shrieking, her already shrill voice becoming even more so.

“Jess. Jess! Are you alright?” I called out, my hand instinctively reaching out to tap her shoulder and pull her with me into the safety of the woods. My hand could not reach her. Some type of force field was surrounding her, and I could not put my hand through its barriers.

It was then that I realized that Jessica was not the only one in the clearing. In fact, there were several others in the clearing right now, and they all looked strangely similar, as though they were variations of the same person. That was really unnerving. After staring at them for a few moments I realized what I was doing and looked away. Not before one of them turned to look back at me.

But it didn’t seem like he was looking at me. It seemed like he was looking through. It seemed like I didn’t exist.”There,” he said, his voice strikingly clear. On instinct, I turned around too, even though he was probably referring to me.

They were.

But not me. They were referring to the Scarlett O’ Hara who was standing on the other side of the clearing, trying in vain to get to her best friend. I found myself staring at me, just watching. Watching to see how I would react- when I looked up and saw me. Abruptly, it started raining, an outright downpour. Only… I couldn’t feel anything. I knew it was raining, because I could see it coming down, but I could not feel it. I realized then that I was invisible; that I was more of an apparition, really.

Focusing once more on the real me, I waited to see how she would react. There was something large and gray in her hands, and she seemed to be about to throw it- right through the center of the circle they had formed around Jessica. Still, I watched as the rock went flying through the circle, and the people forming it cried out in pain.
