And the worst part of this all? Sierra didn’t even seem to be affected at all. She smiled grimly when he came, and that was her only reaction.
“Why is she still breathing, Sierra?” he hissed out her name, making it sound almost deadly. I suppose that was the point though.
Sierra grinned brightly. “It is all part of the effect, of course. I like things…dramatic.” Well, at least she wasn’t lying; the Sierra I knew was probably one of the most dramatic people that I had ever met.
“Get on with it then!”
She flinched, and it was then that I realized that he scared her just as much as he scared me. She just hid it better.
Don’t do it Scarlett.
She already wants you dead.
Don’t do- “Aww…Is the poor, wittle Sierra scared now?”
She stared at me, probably wondering where my backbone had come from. I didn’t have one, but something it was nice to pretend.
“What was that?” her voice was dangerously low; I had hit a nerve. I knew how much she hated being belittled, especially in front of others.
“You heard me.”
I surprised even myself by saying that; normally, I would have just stuttered back something. Normally, I wouldn’t have even said that in the first place. I guess I was just surprising everybody nowadays.
She shot out a breath through her nose, eyes closed as she let out a huff of air with the action. “I’m giving you a chance to take back what you said. If you were smart, then you’d take it.”
“Well then, I guess I’m pretty stupid then, aren’t I?”
Sierra’s eyes shot open as she glared at me. “Who are you and what have you done with Scarlett?”
I thought about her question for a moment. I guess, to her, I would seem really different. Before, her and I, well, we’d never argue like this. Sure we’d tease each other, but not…not like this. This was different. And we both knew it.
In answer to her question, I shrugged. She didn’t need to hear what was going on in my head. Somehow though, I was getting the strangest suspicion that she did know.
“I didn’t start this argument,” she whispered, like she was almost sorry to me. Her lips curved into what might have been an apologetic smile, but was ruined by the malicious look in her eyes. I didn’t trust her for a second.
“Doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is who ends it.”
She knows just as well as I know that I’m not just talking about our petty argument. Because the only thing that truly matters is who’s standing on top in the end. It doesn’t matter who wins the battles; it who wins the war.
And in our case, the one who loses is dead.
And, for me, that means that I’ve lose all respect and any chance of ever finding my mother.
I know that no matter what, Sierra doesn’t want me going to get her- she knows more than I do.
For Sierra, I can only guess at what it may mean to her. I know that it’ll at least mean that the whole world is screwed. By some odd twist of fate, I am the only thing standing in her way. I don’t know how, considering she knows more than I do. Maybe it’s because we could have been considered the same person, at least at one time.
And maybe that’s also why I feel like I can’t do any of this.
“Well, you got one thing right.” Her sarcastic voice cut through my thoughts easily. My eyes shot up, and immediately narrowed into a glare. She was mocking me. “Out of everything else that you got wrong.”
I felt strangely calm. I didn’t know what had happened, but I wasn’t angry at her. Not anymore. Now all I wanted was for everything to be over. I wished none of this had ever happened. And then- “What happened to us, Sierra?” I whispered, gesturing between the two of us, all my fight gone.
She looked surprised at my statement. She wasn’t expecting that. In fact, I wasn’t expecting that little outburst either. Guess I was just surprising everyone today.
“I-“
“Well get on with it! We don’t have all day!”
This time, neither Sierra nor I jumped. Simultaneously, we turned around and glared at the thing. He seemed surprised, and this time, he actually stopped talking. And then I saw it.
There was a ring, surrounding Sierra and I. She noticed it at the exact same time I did. I wanted to reach out and touch it, but I got the idea that this was a not so friendly force field. Whoever touched it first would probably be the one who died.
Her eyes narrowed in on me, and she muttered something that I could barely hear from where I was standing, only a few feet away from her. It didn’t sound English.
I felt something slam into my chest, sending me backwards, just barely missing the ring. Of their own accord, my hands shot up. I stared at them in shock. They were glowing an unnatural green color. Sierra flinched just looking at them.
“Oh, so now who’s afraid?”
“You still should be,” Sierra snapped at me, her voice rising in frustration. I snickered slightly at her expression; it was still kind of amusing to watch. But I quickly sobered up.
“SCARLETT!”
I spun to face the sound, but I couldn’t see anything. The voice sounded like Clarissa’s but nobody was there.
“Nobody can help you now, Scarlett. Not even your precious little angels.” Sierra hissed at me, taunting.
“I don’t need their help.”
And for the first time in this whole mess, I was definitely sure of that one thing.
