"Hello there, you must be Edith!" says the guide. He removes his hat revealing his bald head, even though he's looking me in the eyes I can't help but stare at his fuzzy mustache that resembles a brown caterpillar.
"You can call me, Eddie." I say.
"Okie dokie, Eddie. My name's Bernard but you can call me Benny."
"So how far is Hammond?" I ask as Benny and we walk towards the car.
"Eh it should be about 10 to 15 miles of here. You excited?"
"Not really. I'm actually kind of nervous."
"That's normal, I mean a new school, new country, new kids, new traditions, you'll be the only one there with an American accent, you'll be confused, lost, and let's not mention an easy target for bullies-"
"Um, Benny, that's not really helping."
"Yeah sorry. Overall you'll make new friends and just make sure to enjoy yourself."
"Thanks. What part of England are you from? You're accent sounds a little different." I ask.
"I'm from Bath."
"Bath?"
"That's it."
"I don't think I've ever heard of it."
"It exists. Trust me it's real."
"Ha I believe you."
"So as your guide if you have any questions about where to go or what to do then you can just give me a call or shoot me a text." he hands me a card from his blazer's pocket that reads,
Bernard Richardson
Holmes Chapel, Cheshire
Guide to England
"Thanks."
We pull into a somewhat large school, some girls sit next to trees reading, others braiding each others hair, and a small group stares as I walk in with Bernard following.
I can hear them whispering. I don't think they realize that even though I'm from America I still speak the same language.
"I think she's from Ireland." whispers one girl.
"I'll bet that she's a hillbilly." says another.
"What's in her hair?" says one more, pointing to my pink strip.
"Wow, these girls sure are friendly." I say to Bernard.
"Oh yeah? Just wait til' you meet the boys."
"Boys?"
"Yeah they're complete arses, but I can't say I didn't envy them."
"I thought this was an all girl's school?"
"Oh," He laughs,"No."
"Great. Just great."
When we get up to my room on the second floor, I find my room, 14B.
"Behind this door is your new roommate." Says Bernard.
We open the door to see... nobody.
"Wow, this is a lot of pink!" I say, tossing my back pack onto my plain bed.
"Yep, have fun with that and remember to give me a call if you need me."
"Thanks again."
I guess I don't really know what to do now. I don't know anything about this place. I'm surprised there isn't done preppy guide here to help me. So now I wait, for anything.
I've decided to start by unpacking setting out my bed spread, putting up a few photos of my family, friends, pets. All of a sudden I hear a group of feminine laughs approaching.
"So she's getting here tomorrow?!" exclaims one girl.
The doorknob starts to jiggle as she tries to unlock it.
"No. She's getting here tonight."
The door opens to reveal a girl with a shocked look to match her other two friends.
"Uh.. hi!" I say with what I feel is an awkward smile.
"Or now." whispers the one on the right before the girl holding the keys nudges her.
"Hello you must be my new roomy, I'm Stephanie and you are..?"
"Oh I'm Eden but you can call me Ed."
"Ed?" asks the one with bright orange hair.
"Yes, Ed." I nod.
"That's a boys name, isn't it?" Asks the brunette.
"No it's my name." I say.
"Okay then. This is Veronica." Stephanie motions to the brunette.
"And this is Everly." she motions to the red head.
"Nice to meet you." I say.
"Yeah." they mutter.
They walk to the other side of the room and pick out clothes from Stephanie's closet.
"So could you give me some tips as to where to go? I have my schedule but-"
"Um we would love to but we have to get ready for dinner in the main hall." Says Veronica.
"Get ready?" I ask.
"Nobody goes to dinner in their uniform." laughs Everly.
Judging by what they're wearing fitting in won't be easy.
"So could you all wait for me to get ready because I'm not at all sure where the main hall is."
"The thing is, we sit at a table that is already full and we wouldn't want to take you and then have to ditch you. So we're just going to head out now."
They all walk out, leaving me to find my way.
I've been in this school for an hour and I'm already lost.
As always I am lost and alone.
