Chapter Twenty-Two
“Oh. My. God. What on earth are you doing?” demanded Eva in horror as she watched Jasmine toss different articles of clothing into a brown duffle bag that was lying on her bed.
“I’m doing what I should have done weeks ago—getting the hell out of this place,” she replied simply as she closed the empty drawer and stood up. “I don’t know what came over me, but I’ve had enough of all this drama. I’ve never wanted to be here anyways.”
“But…you can’t leave! It’s not going to be the same without you here!” protested Eva before hesitating. “Wait a minute…is it about that girl
Jasmine heaved a sigh. It had been less than two days since they left the island and even fewer since the third elimination round. This time four girls were eliminated, but once again, she was left to stay on the show. She found the whole thing strange. It bothered her that Alec hadn’t eliminated her yet. What was even stranger was the fact that he had hated her from the start, so why keep her on the show? Jasmine knew there was one answer that made sense, but she refused to acknowledge it.
“So… can I take your silence as a yes I’m staying?” asked Eva slowly, intruding on her thoughts.
Jasmine groaned inwardly. She didn’t anticipate that leaving the show would be such a big deal to her roommate. Choosing her words carefully, she said; “You know you could always leave the show as well…”
Eva immediately shook her head at the suggestion of leaving as well, “No, no, I already told you about my dilemma with my parents, besides—”
“Well then, you can stay, but I’ll be leaving now,” cut in Jasmine as she zipped up her duffle bag and walked towards the door. She was sure that the longer she stayed here listening to Eva argue with her, the more time she would have to reconsider her decision on leaving.
“Wait! How are you going to get back home? Last time I checked it was a hefty distance away.”
“Don’t worry about it,” replied Jasmine as she reached the doorway, “I borrowed some money from my friend Jace… Anyways, you take care of yourself now. Don’t let the other girls get into your skin.”
“But—”
“Good-bye Eva,” said Jasmine firmly as she placed a hand on the doorknob. Just as she was about to turn it, a sudden knock came from the other side of the door. Frowning, she threw it open, revealing a short chubby girl with dark hair.
“Hi Jasmine!” exclaimed Madeline while casting a huge dimpled smile.
“Oh hi,” she replied slowly, “what’s up?"
“Well, I’m looking for Albert and I was wondering if you had seen him anywhere?”
Jasmine arched her eyebrows in a curious manner, “Who’s Albert?” she repeated.
Madeline giggled, “Sorry, I meant my hamster. He has golden brown fur and he’s about the size of a tennis ball. My nanny wasn’t here this morning, so I tried to clean out his cage by myself. It was getting awfully dirty, but when I took him out, he escaped from me.”
“Um…sorry, I don’t think I have seen your hamster—”
“But I’m sure Jasmine would love to help you find him,” piped up Eva from behind her.
