Chapter 8

"You've kind of been what?" I screeched, my head jerking to face him. The creeper had been watching me. No wonder he knew all my favorite bands and what my dream room looked like.

"What the hell?" I stormed out of his room and outside before he caught up to me.

"Listen, Nik, it isn't what you think. I haven't been stalking you and watching you change or anything like that. No, no, I mean I've simply been looking out for you. Yes, I've sat underneath the tree in your front yard and looked at you through your open window, but that was just to keep you safe. I kept my eyes closed when you changed because I knew I wouldn't be able to control myself if I did. I'd end up scaring the shit out of you by slamming through your window, horny as hell. I swear on my life, I didn't do anything perverted. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. I did take a few tid bits of ideas from you so I could have your life all set up here. I didn't want it to be too big of a change for you after you became one of us."

He was breathing hard after his rant. I stared at the ground going through what he had told me. It wasn't too hard to believe him, I could see it in his eyes that he was telling the truth. The problem is that I was human for the longest time and to humans, watching people in their windows is a big no-no. Zavier was awaiting my answer and sighed when he didn't receive one for a while.

"Maybe if I had my mom explain the whole mate thing and the whole being a werewolf thing it would help," he said. I nodded and walked back up to his-my room. I sat on the bed and waited for Mary to come upstairs. She knocked before stepping inside and sitting on the bed next to me. Zavier peeked his head in to say that he was going to go take care of some pack business with his dad. I gave him a curt nod and glared at the floor.

When he had shut the door I turned towards Mary with a questioning look. She gave me a small smile and asked, "What did he do?"

"He stalked me! He watched me through my window and took ideas from my head! How is that not wrong?" I yelled out. She giggled a little before answering my question. "Sweetie, that's not uncommon for a male wolf.

"Werewolves are different than humans. Humans don't have soulmates unless mated to a wolf. Werewolves spend their lives searching for that one that they're going to cherish and love with their whole heart. The one that makes them feel complete. Many wolves don't feel the joy of find their one because the world is so large. Those wolves spend their entire lives searching, but to no avail. Some wolves are born without a mate because their mate died at a very young age. Those wolves are nomads. They wander the world looking for their purpose.

"What Zavier did was not meant to be taken in a perverted way. He said the truth when he said that he wanted to make sure you were okay. He is like all other male wolves after they find their mate. He wants to protect you from everything. That's the difference between humans and wolves. For werewolves, the males protect us, nourish us, provide for us, and all they ask in return is that we love them and listen to them. I do not mean to say that you must do everything he says. I simply mean that he may know something you may not and you must listen to him so he can keep you safe.

"Zavier only wants what's best for you and at times, that may be really hard to accept, but trust him. He knows what he's doing," she explained with a smile. My eyes were wide open with shock. "You mean to say that...all I have to do is love him? That's it? No catch?" She nodded. I had a small smile on my face and I turned with more questions.

"Can I ask you more questions about this whole werewolf/shifter thing?" She smiled at me and replied, "Of course."

I grinned and proceeded questioning her about the shifter lifestyle. I learned that female humans and female weres are very similar besides the enhanced sight, hearing, smell, strength, etc. One difference is that there aren't...monthly gifts. Instead, on the full moon, we simply go into heat for twenty-four hours. Men go through a similar process, but they are the day after the full moon. Weres also can only get pregnant while the female is in heat.

After a few more minutes of information, Mary stood up to leave. As she was walking out the door, she turned towards me and said, "The office is down the stairs and down the hallway on your right."

I gave her a grateful smile and set off for Zavier. I checked the office, but he wasn't there. Don told me to check outside in the backyard.

I found Zavier sitting on a tree branch, staring at nothing. I leaned against the tree and watched him. He looked so peaceful, but I could see the sadness in his face. I pouted and began to climb silently. I crouched on the branch next to his and jumped onto his lap. He jumped, startled, but somehow managed to keep us both on the branch. When he saw me, his eyes showed fear. At first I couldn't imagine what he was afraid of, but then I remembered something that Mary told me. "Wolves only fear three things, silver, losing their mate, and their mate rejecting them." He was afraid I was going to reject him. I smiled at him and pulled him into a hug after I straddled the branch we were on. At first, he was a tense and stiff as a board, but he finally relaxed and pulled me closer to him.

I pulled back and stared into his eyes. His eyes held confusion, but I smashed that feeling with the simple words, "Thank you." His lips pulled into the largest grin I've ever seen. What I didn't expect was for him to grab me bridal style and jump off the fricking branch! I screamed and snapped my eyes shut waiting for my stomach to settle. When we reached the ground, I jumped out of his arms and fell onto the ground. "Oh, sweet ground," I sighed and closed my eyes.

Zavier chuckled and sat down at my head, pulling my head onto his lap. I smiled and fell asleep to the feel of the warm sun.
